Hard wax polish

Anyone know where to get a 'hard' wax polish? I've searched and found soft bees wax polishes - go on like vaseline and eventually harden, but this doesn't seem to get a good hard non-sticky finish. I've been recommended to look at hard wax, but I haven't seen anything around like "Acme hard wax polish".

What's it called?
What's a good brand?
Where can I buy it from?
How do I apply it?

(I want to use it on a harp, not for lathe work. I don't know if this makes a difference.)

Carnauba wax is generally considered the hardest wax suitable for wood. It's hard. Sold by several manufacturers (Feast Watson, Gilly Stephenson to name two). Both are good products. I use them on furniture.

However they are probably partly beeswax, for ease of use and cheaper manufacture. If you want the real thing you would be best buying carnauba flakes (probaby from an antique restoration supplier). Dissolve them in turps (use natural rather than mineral for a nicer smell if that's an issue) and you're in business.

PS I see you're in Brisbane. Goods'nChattels in the Gabba should have carnauba flakes.

Traditional wax is a clever blend of soft & hard waxes & might suit.

Aha, so hard wax is still soft when you put it on, but it's a different type of wax, so it dries harder when the solvent evaporates. This sounds very good. I'll find some and give it a go on my next project.

Traditional Wax www.ubeaut.com.au/trad.html Don't think there is a harder one but could be wrong. Carnauba wax isn't much good by itself it is too hard and really needs to be mixed with other waxes to make it easy to apply and workable.

Been watching this thread with interest as I have a secret recipe to make a very hard furniture wax. It was passed on to me by an old master furniture restorer.

But not wanting to go in competition with the board's owners it has, and will remain secret. Wouldn't want Neil to blow a gasket would we.

My apologies. I was merely responding to an earlier post, and my comments were intended to be constructive. Please note

1) I was sworn at by the BB admin for asking what I still think was a valid question. (perhaps I read his tone wrong)
2) In my reply, I pointed out some issues from the point of view of someone who found this site by external links, and offered suggestions.
3) I am not a professional web designer, but I have built my own business web pages, and I felt I had comments to offer. It is their choice whether to consider these comments or ignore them.
4) I did not insult the BB, or the many fantastic posts. I think this is a great BB. I just made suggestions as to how ubeaut could make better use of this BB as an advertising tool.
5) I did not swear.

I'm surprised by the tone of responses I'm getting here, but I have seen some very good threads and posts on this BB, and I think it's a great forum. I will walk away from this thread which has going bad and completely off topic, and see what gems I can find on other threads.

I personally admire the way the ubeaut team lurk in the background and politely remind us of their commercial products, not just ram it down our throats at every chance. Stone the flamin crows! What what's going on here???? I go away for a day and come back to bedlam. Hell, it wasn't even surfdabbler I was having a shot at, it was JB, he was the one spouting off about everyone else in the world's finishes. I thought he had been around long enough to have at least had a look beyond the forums.

Surfdabbler I did not swear at you, or anyone else, I merely used some rather frustrated (yet colourful) punctuation at the beginning and end of a reasonably caustic tongue in cheek statement.

Sturdee - by all means feel free to put your old master furniture restorer secret recipe in the forums. That really doesn't bother me at all, matter of fact I would be pleased to see more of them, after all I'm quite happy to sell raw material as well as our finished products. Just remember it won't be a secret recipe any more.

Matrix - Just you be careful please, using words like feckless respones could get you sent to time out for an hour or two. (No I'm not a spelling Nazi but it jumped off the screen and hit me fair between those 2 looky outy things on either side of me nose and I just couldn't help myself)

As I have said before I strongly believe that each forum section should be "sponsered" by a ubeaut product just s simple statement at the top of the page like " sponsored by the polishers handbook its great"

You do all know about the polishers hand book, its the best no waste no fillers read about wood finishing in the post war era. available from ubeaut dealers everywhere.
