New slab for spa, should I waterproof or seal under tiles?

Hi all, new concrete slab, reinforced. About 150mm thick. Outdoors.

Plastic sheeting / membrane was laid under the bar chairs / reo. Concreter knew what he was doing.

I'm going to tile the slab before the spa gets delivered.

Should I apply a sealant or membrane to the slab before tiling? Would it help or hinder?

Is the slab simply a base for the spa tub or is the slab serving other purposes ?
If it’s just a base for the spa no need for membrane or tiles.

Hi droog, tiles are for aesthetic purposes only. WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor) positive.

The slab will be a base for the spa with about a metre additional for the steps etc.

In that case I don’t see what advantage a membrane under the tiles will provide.

he sure did, sounds like he charged you extra for stuff you didn't need?

how big is this spa that it needed to be 150mm thick?


there's no need to membrane or seal the slab. why would you want to make the slab water proof? just make sure you prime it

I said “about” 150mm thick. It needed to have sufficient height to make level with the existing concrete.

Should you seal concrete before tiling ? IMHO Yes

What do you folk recommend for sealing concrete?

I didn't seal my pool beam, and it's been perfect (coping pavers) for about 10 years

Just to note, depending on the type, tiles can be very slippery.
I think 150mm would be an ideal depth for a spa. Mines 100mm and it has moved downwards slightly under the weight.
