Thread: So, this Sunday forum outage....

To Ueee and , judging from your reply to my posting, you seem to have a different belief than Neil about the colours being logged to be fixed. My angst is about basic readability, not just a cosmetic thing. If I can't read things I am not in a good position to contribute to the site as I am used to. I applaud the effort that goes into this website, and recognise that functional upgrades will be of benefit. But ignoring well documented knowledge about human visual acuity is unhelpful.
Over and out.

Couple of things for members to note, please....
1. The forums need to be re-indexed, this will take a long time due to all the posts (1.5 million), this should cure a few problems, E.g. searching, settings etc Hopefully it will be finished tomorrow.
2. The Administrators are flat knacker at the moment trying to smooth things over so please try to only comment on stuff that appears to be broken.
3. The colours we know about.
4. The colours we know about.
5. Performance will be slower until the indexing is done.
6. Pictures. The admins are working on tracking this one down and hope to have it sorted asap.
7. Some of the forums are still being sorted out e.g. Market Place.
8. I recommend that you do not tinker with your profile settings until the forums are stable. It is easier to fix one problem for everyone with the same settings.
9. I have merged four threads into one, please do not create new upgrade problem threads all over the place on the forums.
10. iSpy is not available, use Activity Stream - Woodwork Forums instead (save it to your favourites).
11. Did I mention we know about the colours?
12. Please have patience, all will be fixed in good time.
13. THE PROBLEMS WE KNOW ABOUT ARE LISTED HERE, ALONG WITH THEIR STATUS.

Chrism3, I made the same observation in the admin area early this morning, as did another mod. If we can influence a change to make unread posts stand out better we will. I can tell you that for the amount of posts I read I find it a real nuisance and understand what you are saying.
For those who believe this is just a eye or monitor setting problem, think again. I use three monitors at home and it is difficult to see on all of them, as it is on my laptop and iPad.
For now though there are other tasks that need attention.

After a short while using the new forums, only one issue really stands out to me.
Why is the thread heading on the LHS of the page (first column), and the forum it is in hard up against the opposite side of the page? These two bits of information go together. I find myself scanning the extreme right hand column to find forums I am interested in, then trying to associate thread headings on the other side of the page with these. Maybe I'll have to get a much smaller screen.......

There has been a minor colour change to a blue font in the thread listings. I find it easier to read now, hopefully others will too.
Admins made the change in the middle of the night and will make some more changes as time permits. The indexing is close to completing so we hope things will speed up a bit soon.

I'm having a minor drama that I don't think anyone else has listed yet...
When I reply to posts (including this one!) I keep having to save the text into notepad first...because as soon as I hit the "Post Quick Reply" icon it freezes. I get the "woodworking forums not responding" message and I have to reload the page; often several times, and of course it loses my text-hence why I save it in another program first. Last night I tried to reply to a post and it took 7 attempts.....
Maybe it's me, maybe my software (W7 & IE), I don't know....computer luddite.
I would like to offer my gratitude to the moderators who are trying to herd all the cats required to get this upgrade online and working.
Oh, has anyone mentioned the colours yet?

The dropouts are noted but should disappear when the indexing is complete. The server resources are stretched so give it another day please.

Greg, I think Mr Brush is referring to the New Posts page and I agree that the separation of the Thread Name (first column) and the Forum Name (last column) makes it hard to scan that page. It has already improved markedly with the change from Red text for the Forum Name to Blue text. Making the Blue text Bold for the forum name, same as the Thread Title would improve things even further.
Overall though I find all the pages now much easier to read and focus on what is important and what is not.
I'm sure we'll get there in time.

I hope that email notifications are high on the priority list, along with image thumbnails.
Or am I the only one not getting notifications?

This is my first attempt at posting on the new look forums.
I have noticed, and I haven't seen mentioned yet, that the forums are no longer working on the Iphone Tapatalk app. The old version did, but neither this forum or the renovation forum work with the new version.
This was posted via firefox as Tapatalk doesn't work
Cheers
