That was always one of our favourite nights out up there.
$8 for two movies sitting in the old deck chairs, rugged up, Milo at interval. Couldn't have a better night out!!!

Pic 1 is across the road and down a few hundred metres, revegetation work by local landcare group and conservation volunteers. All the guinea grass had been slashed and poisoned and rainforest species planted in the last few weeks.
Pic 2 is the same area, looking downstream. You can see the trees that were planted about 2 years ago.
I didn't do any planting, but I have done hazard reduction burns either side of the plantings to protect them and have used our brigade's truck to water them.
Pic 3 is down at the river, looking upstream. Had some good rain last night so there's been a nice flush out.
Pic 4, same spot, looking downstream
Pic 5, creek that feeds into the river, looking upstream to the road and bridge.
Pic 6. More tree plantings by landcare and conservation volunteers (some of the conservation volunteers are young backpackers who've come halfway across the world and are pitching in). In the background is our brigade's shed, built with funds raised by volunteers, built by volunteers, lawn is mowed by the young son of one of the volunteer officers (voluntarily, of course:D )
Volunteering certainly isn't unique to Australia but it's nice to live in a community and country where people care enough to contribute and where one can make a worthwhile contribution and make a difference.
Happy Australia day all! :2tsup:
continued from above.

I had to work, and ended up mowing bloody grass between 11am - 3 pm.
Had to mow out about 10 meters around the place I'm staying at.
30 something degrees and humid as hell.
Stupid, bloody-minded Aussies. :D
Time for a cold water and put a "steak" on for dinner.
Bummer Clinton, Hope the "water" went down well.
Harry Good photos mate, Like how the pelican was using the shag as a surfboard.
Great shots Harry...............got any more...........AL
Yeah got more but dont want to clog up this thread too much... its not dial up friendly already!
Thank you cliff (and someone else) for the honourable mention on the craigs hut photo. Interestingly that was the original light no photoshopping or colour enhancement. just a trick of the hot yellow sun and smoke haze.
sadly ythis patch of bush doesn't look like this any more. (got burnt)
Spent the weekend with relo's n friends at Bendethera camping and 4wd'ing.
Pic 1. The river/waterhole where we camped
Pic 2. One of the many Goanna's that visited us over the weekend
Looks like a nice spot Oges
These were taken by my Uncle at my parent's property on Australia Day.
Glendon is about 70Kms (ATCF) west of Longreach.
The old white shed in some of the photos are the, now closed, Katherine Creek State School. It opened in 1968, I when there for 3 years.
The photos have stunning colour contrasts due to the odd light cased by having one part of the sky blacked out by the storm & the other part still relatively bright.
Photos 4 & 5 overlap but I have never tried any photo stitching.
Great pix Cliff, water doesn't appear to be a problem there - which makes a pleasant change from all of the news reports re who has none and who has too much.
BTW how are you and Mick getting on up where you are - webbed feet :U and hopefully no damage.
Regards,
Bob
The waterholes were all man made... I mean, Mum made. :D
My Mum has been digging waterholes around the house for years. (with a bit of help from a few others along the way)
They get filled when it rains & she tops them up with bore water in the dry season.
They help keep the place a bit cooler in summer & they also help to keep some of her collection of gum trees alive.
We, Mick & I, haven't been near any wind lately, a fair bit of rain but no wind.
There has been heaps more rain a bit south of us in the last week, mostly coastal.
On the rain fall map attached, Mick is a bit to the north west of Cairns & I am west of Innisfail just out of the purple area into the blue area.
We have had about 7" 175mm since Australia Day.
Have a look at how much they have had west of Longreach in the last week.
They only got about 6mm out of that storm where the photo was taken. :(
The place 10Kms away that was under that storm at the time got 67mm.
According to the meteorologist on the radio yesterday morning Kuranda got 120mm in about 2 hours on Thursday night. Not sure how much we got last night but there were some pretty heavy falls. Thursday night the drains across my drive way silted up and overflowed flooding my garage and the store room behind it. Probably only to about 5 - 10mm depth, but enough to fill it all with silt. :~ Beats being short of water though
Mick
So I take it the falls are pretty spectacular at present Mick?
Alex,
SWMBO is very ill at the moment and I can't really leave the house. I did duck across the road to look at the river and it's reasonably high so I'd guess the falls are, well, falling.
Mick
I missed Oz day, but here's an Aussie photo.
Taken at Lennox Head 04/06
Here's another one
Ahhh the memories you've stirred up Cliff! Have they still got the canvas deckchairs in there? Most comfortable time I've ever had at the movies! :2tsup:
I'm pretty sure I've worked at your place too! 1984 - pole testing contract for FunnyQEB - did the whole Malanda area. Ahh the memories!:U
Yeap, we went there last night, saw 2 current movies for $11 a head. Only place I know of that you can take a Pizza in to the movies.
Ooops, sorry if I mislead you, that is not my house, I was talking about the very wet green tablelands in general.
That is an old farm on Loyde Rd. not far from Lake Barrine or Tinaroo dam.
Our place is at the wetter end of the tablelands between Tarzali & Millaa Millaa. Our power comes off the Tarzali feeder.
Knowing the way I horde things, I've probably still got the plans of that feeder somewhere - visiting every power pole in a district is a great way to get to know where everything is - stingin's trees, leeches, wait-a-while, 6m Scrubbies, good places to roll a cruiser..............................
.............but I did love the area - magic country!
