Default Yes, another newbie - budding woodworker - going to change the world...

    Hi folks,

well, after not touching a tool for many years, my wife and I have bought a lovely 70s timber house in northern Sydney and so I have the space and the environment conducive to getting back into it. Of course I'm referring to woodworking...

So far I've knocked up a cooktop/oven cabinet, mounted a horizontal base under the cathedral ceiling in the kitchen on which an expensive rangehood is now dangling precariously and am planning a host of other dodgy projects to massacre - including outdoor settings, decking, an outdoor entertainment area around the pool and a 300m tall spaceship. OK, so the spaceship was a silly gag - but who knows if we have kids one day??!!

Anyway, I have an engineering background but limited experience with carpentry though few things in life (while clothed) IMHO can offer the same joys as designing something and building it into life! Having recently discovered and fallen in love with Google Sketchup, I'm destined to be forever designing items far too complicated for me to build, but what's life without a challenge? I'm sure that's where you guys will be wonderfully helpful and hopefully in time I'll be able to return some of my experience and bits of advice.

Until we build a proper garage to replace the carport, my workspace is confined to our top balcony where I make do with limited space, hand tools and a continuum of fantastically useful comments from my lovely wife (like "wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to buy it?", "what - Bunnings again?? That's the 4th time today...", "why do things take 4 times longer than you estimate?", "I'd really like to be able to use the kitchen one day..." etc.).

So that's more than enough about me - thanks for reading this far and I look forward to sharing woodworking experiences here in the future! I've attached some shots of work done and in the planning - the outdoor setting progress will be thrown up on Big Stuff for your amusement!

    Cheers,
    Dave (Turramurra)

Joining this crew we'll soon put a stop to that. (you'll spend more time on the forum than doing anything else)

I find this site very useful and not just for making things.

    Default welcome cotter..

Davis, firstly welcome. The FGC has seen many new faces, and old ones returning to the old skill of building rather than shopping. Moving forwards and onwards your story sounds remotely familiar and I have no doubt there is wealth of knowledge coming your way. From the images attached i can see you are doing extremely well ( is that Meile?) for a beginnner and we look forward to following your path for the next few years and then watch as you will be in a position to onshare with a newbie.

Well, thanks for your collective support. I certainly hope to be more than just a drain on things around here and look forward to spending more time on this forum and less time practising making kids (as "The Bleeder" suggested)!

As for you Monsieur Harratt - your kind noting of my rank amateur standing hasn't gone unregistered and I suspect I'd have more luck searching for you lurking in the "Wood Whispering Women" department... You've met a few of those over the years mate. Festool indeed!

    Cheers,
    Dave
