I am doing a reno on our internal stairs. They are currently carpeted but re-carpeting is not allowed

My cheapest option would be to paint the timber. What type of paint should I use?

As 3 of the steps are chip board I will need to replace them with something I can paint. What type of timber is suitable for stairs?
