Is There Something Illegal Here?

Hi,

I was told by a well qualified person last weekend that there is something illegal within the image provided. If so, can you tell me what it is?.

I live in Melbourne so the answer (if true) may only be applicable to Victorian law(s).

Looks like there's only one security seal for a start and the board it's mounted on would be illegal in NSW as it should be on a bakerlite board not timber that could get wet.

I don't know about the board, but the security tag is gone from the top left hand side of the meter possibly showing it has been tampered with.

I would think the board that is is mounted to for sure.
That stuffs sags and warps and eventually falls apart.

Whilst the backing board is not correct the power company would be more concerned with the absence of the security seal. Removal of that seal by unauthorised persons is illegal and is prima facie evidence of meter tampering.

From the discussions I had a while back with a meter inspector who was going around checking meter boxes for those kinds of seals, I found out that when the meters are being read the reader will report if any seal is tampered with.

If so the power company supplying our area will prosecute the homeowner for theft of power.

The new seals are plastic cable ties with a seal thing on them.

Well done lads.

You picked up on both items. However, I will say that the seal missing was missing before we moved in. The second incorrect item was the wooden support box for the meter. Both these items were picked up by a cluey electrician we had in last weekend. He said that it should be in a metal box as the present set up was a fire hazard. He also noted that most of the connections within the fuse box box didn't not go through the RCD device which he rectified at no additional cost. My concern was we had this additional fuse box installed by another electrician only about a year ago:eek:. So I suppose the best thing would be to get him back in to install one. However, he said my electrical supplier (AGL - with whom I have some shares for years now) are the slowest company in town to get in to disconnect and reconnect the main line. however, we have many other things going on around the house atm so we will leave this bit for a while.

In Sydney any acredited service provider (ASP) with a cat 3 (I think) license it authorised for disconnection and re-connection of consumer mains. Sometimes they're cheaper than the Energy Distributor.

BTW generally AGL subcontract this contestible work as they don't carry repair staff for electricals (at least in Sydney thats the case) so why give a profit to AGL just to organise a sub-contractor. Get your own contractor in and only pay once.

In passing I work for an energy distributor but not one which provides work services in Victoria - no conflict of interest.
