installing chandeliers

How big and expensive is installing chandeliers throughout my unit going to be (I think 7 will be needed but it’s the labour im interested in knowing about) … again, can I do this on my own? Or is this a professionals only job? Where do I find the info on how to go about this?

Depends on the fitting. If you unscrew the bulb shroud (the small 40mm cover ring where the bulb half turns into the socket) then you can do this yourself. This means that the fitting hangs from the bulb shroud.
I'll lay odds that it won't.

Anywhere you have to undo a wire, must be done by a licenced electrician - its yellow pages time.

BTW the box that the fitting comes in will probably say "to be fitted by licenced electrician". Also ask the shop where your buying it from if this is the case. They may even advise without asking.

ah k, tops! I dont like to outsource things on the basis of "i just dont know", generally like to have a crack at it if i can/should but you just gave me the free ride card so i'll call the sparky.
reckon it will be an exy job? very involved?

In terms or work:
If your new lamps just need wiring to the ceiling rose (half round plastic thing on the ceiling) maybe 30 minutes per lamp at 7 lamps = 3.5 hours.

Not being a sparky I would estimate their labour at about $60 to $80 per hour plus the $80 to get them off their butt (they call it "call out" or "travelling") plus parts like wire and stuff - they'll just add another $50. You might get away with $400 but because the light are chandeliers they would probably double that to $800. Hey you can afford a chandelier you must be loaded.

To be realistic I'm not sure what a sparky is likely to charge but I have seen some horrendous prices in the past for simple work. Your area, likely income, availability to have the work done all plays a part. Use the yellow pages and get 3 or 4 quotes. If the prices vary outrageously choose a middle one. If they tell you the whole unit needs re-wiring definitely get more quotes and don't panic till they all tell you the same story. There are sparkies out there who are honest and some that are not. Listen to what they say and if it sounds like bull say thanks very much, here's the door, next quote.

as above quotes ranged from $55-$77 per light ... doesnt seem too crazy to me? Let me know if Im wrong but I reckon Ive done ok
