Yep, close down the Orange bit, it's been a bit of a fizzer. Provided the moderators (and I'm not saying they have, do or would) don't start imposing their own morality, politics, religion, prejudices etc and delete posts that don't fit nicely into their view of the world.

Well, let's just take a step back from it for a minute.

The 'orange' section was brought about in response to numerous complaints from people about their posts being edited or deleted. The idea was that people who wanted to post controversial topics or jokes could use the open slather forum because participants had to actively ask for access, thereby waiving some of their right to protest at things they found offensive.

We asked for this and we got it. Now the way I see it, the only real problem here is that some people who might have participated in these controversial threads do not wish to get a password and so, once the thread is moved, they lose the ability to contribute. Of course the ones that start there, they never know about.

I think there are three possible solutions to this problem:

    1. Leave it as it is and encourage people to get a password
    2. Get rid of the Open Slather forum
    3. Reintroduce the old censorship rules, whereby if you post something unacceptable in the public forum it is edited or deleted as in the old days. Only threads started in the Open Slather forum appear there and no threads are moved. In other words, if you want to be controversial post in Open Slather, otherwise it is subject to the same rules.

At the end of the day, we're supposed to be here to talk about woodworking related topics and the rest is a bit of a diversion. I don't think that the 'orange' section is affecting the woodworking discussion at all, so as I see it, it's not a big deal from that point of view.

To the guys that don't have a password, if you want to be in on it, get one. It's no big deal and we can all just get on with whatever it is we do and stop worrying about what colour the background of the page is.

    Couldn't agree more.

Don't shutdown the orange room. It serves its purpose.

I'd encourage anybody with an open mind to get a password.

I see only two problems at the moment
    - people being precious about being moderated - grow up kiddies, Neil ain't running a kindergarten and doesn't need to be a kindy teacher.

    - people being too precious to get a password - look kids, if you don't want to get a password, fair enough, but don't complain about not being able to participate, that was the choice YOU made when you chose not to get a password.

Is there any secret to getting a password?
I was in the middle of a converation a couple of days ago when the thread was moved to the "sealed section".
I requested a password straight away but nothing has happened.
    Is there a secret?
was I holding my tounge wrong when I typed out my request?
Do I not know the secret password that you have to enter when you are requesting a password?
Is their a secret handshake amongst woodies that I need to know?

Hmm, in all fairness, I'm going to get a password and see for myself before I go any further. probably should have done this before getting on my soapbox.
    cheers

I am an offender that started a thread that recently got bumped to the Closed section.

I had the password and data dumped it as on my first few visits that section seemed purile and some posts riled me up. I guess I chose not to pollute my mind and quite frankly if I wanted that I wouldn't need to go online to get it.

I would like to see the rest of the thread, but at the risk of toilet humour and "shoot em all and let god sort them out" comments - no thanks.

Consider me chastised - I will start nothing about politics, unless I'm happy to slip in before the moderators move it .

Not that I am whinging - the forum is great and the people responsible are doing a fantastic job. I'll consider myself as having a right to whinge when I am providing a similiar free service, or when I start paying a membership fee. Untill then it is all good.

    but....
    Cheers,
    Clinton

Did you go to the Open slather forum and click on the link that says "Click here for a password"?

    That worked for me.

Have a look at the latest thread in the closed forum about "Netball". What I have read so far is completely inoffensive.
Now I don't know if the poster started it in that forum or not, but if it was relegated to there by a moderator then get rid of the closed room because it has sent our moderator crazy.

    but....
    Me too.

Recently I was involved in the debate about RE agents. I made the point that minorities, of any colour or creed, should not be condemned because of actions by a few. After my post another member made a joke about it which I found very offensive. Whilst typing a rebuttal the post got moved out from underneath me. The offensive post probably remains but, because of my decision not to go into a closet forum ,I can not do anything about it.

A number of other posts since, where I made a contribution, got moved as well. I am not impressed and this post is probably my last serious contribution to any matter outside of woodworking.

Hence that if the current system of sanitising everything remains we might as well remove some forums as Nothing to do with woodwork or Have your say because the moment you do say something it gets moved.

If the majority wants this brave new forum then so be it, I personally don't, I am not pushing for a change but replying to 's question as to if we want it.

I will accept the decisions made by the moderators but at the moment IMO there is no difference between this forum and other online woodworking forums. From my perspective, having chosen not to enter a closet forum, the forums from the other side of the pond and this one are now too sanitised and humourless to hold a great attraction. In fact some overseas forums seem a bit more liberal than ours has become.

It would be nice to know the number of participants of the orange forum, the useage etc and maybe a proper public poll would be useful.

    Peter.
