Near Taroom, Central Queensland. 92,000 acres of pretty country, 750 mm rainfall, mostly summer rain.
Low sandstone ranges with valley flats in between.
The DPI told my parents that we could grow wheat or other grains on it and the soil fertility would stand up for 7 years. Probably about 9,000 acres suited to dryland cropping.
After re-fencing most of it, and re-stocking it some moron threw a match down and we were left with about 80,000 acres of black and most of the stock killed. One of 5 properties that were pretty badly burnt out.
Pretty hard to claw back from that with a mortgage. I think the parents walked out without owing anything, but with nothing.
Only take about 4.5 Mil to get it back - when I get my super, I'll buy it with a loan and go farming till I go broke as well.
The homestead was 50 squares, pre-built in Toowoomba, dis-assembled and marked, then packed on Bullock carts and taken to the property in 1903, maybe earlier. Also had a pit-sawn, on-property built, Managers cottage attached to it.
The bloke that owns it now seems to be having it as a hobby. Doesn't seem to be making any $ off it. He's restored the house and, I think, heritage listed it. Good on him.

Me ! ...I went to the big smoke (Lismore
) with my wife and two youngest ( 1 & 3 years) and basically followed her around from one shop to the next, with Nikki on my back in those baby backpack things.....had a good perve at one of those pictures of one of those models in next to nothing in a shop window,,,, then noticed my own reflection...kid on back, kid on my hand.......whipped Mr Mum
, bloody hell, how'd that happen ?!!! I still feel like a virgin !
every 20metres or so the backpack kid would rip open the velcro on my hat and toss it to the ground. Kinda annoying trying to bend down and pick it up over and over, with all that wait on my back, till I realised the solution was to not put it back on my head (homer Simpson)
Molly was in good form though. No running off on us.
I can winge too ..Clinton..oh dear
Got back around 2pm, had some lunch, took my eldest to stay over at a friends, went to work, put milk in bottles, cleaned up the mess, got back now. Made a sandwich and cuppa and turned this box on. See if there's anything I like on E-bay.
