I assume in post #3, the 500kg mentioned means the post is carrying 500kg ?? so any repair/replace must be done in a safe manner.
i.e prop whatever is above with acrow prop/s.
For my money I would not think about any repair without seeing a pic of all the post and what it is supporting.
If it is supporting 500kg, I would be replacing it.

!00% agree.
The above advice is only valid for the information provided in post 14
I for one do not believe that anyone would use a 6mm wall thickness for a decorative post carrying no load but that is what post 14 is implying despite the conflicting ? information in post 3

There's no context. There's insufficient information to conclude anything one way or another. A photo of the rust was shown in the first post. Nothing more. We don't know what that post does.
If I were to take it on face value, we might suppose the post was structural at one time (eg. supporting a verandah roof - the 6mm is a giveaway), and with renovations that may have been carried out, the post now supports nothing more than a sign or a garden climbing plant.

Re post #14 Wozza may be saying the repair will be just for looks, who knows until he comes back with more info.
And what does the 500kg refer to in post #3 ?
As is often the case on forums, we have to assume, and when we assume, we ? well I am sure you get it.
Dont worry, wozza will be back.
He is forever repairing things in the unit block in Cairns.
Has been for quite some years now.
