    Threads a little old now, but I reckon one of those deck scrubbing brooms (short stiff bristles) & heaps of sand could be worth a go for this sort of thing.

    Sand is not your answer , at least in my opinion, "sand" blasting contains silica and you dont want to do that anywhere near your lungs. There are a million if not more medias to blast with that can be done in open air without the respitory complications and epa complications of sand. We blast things everyday in my work , and it makes the pallets they are on splinter terribly. Email me and I will give you a name and phone number of a guy I KNOW who can tell you what media to use for the wood you wish to refurbish . There are plastics and things like ground walnut shells or corn husks that will do exactly what you want, but im not the expert.
