How to stuff Speed Radar
Top this for a speeding ticket...
Two Hunter traffic patrol officers from Newcastle LAC were
involved in an unusual incident while checking for speeding
motorists on the F3 Freeway. One of the officers used a
hand-held radar device to check the speed of a vehicle approaching
over the crest of a hill, and was surprised when the speed was
recorded at over 300 mph. Their radar suddenly stopped working and
the officers were not able to reset it.
Just then a deafening roar over the treetops revealed that the radar
had in fact latched on to a Williamtown Tornado fighter jet which was
engaged in a low-flying exercise over Wyong, approaching from the Ocean.
Back at police headquarters the Local Area Commander fired off a stiff
complaint to the RAAF Liaison officer at Williamtown.
Back came the reply in true laconic RAAF style:
"Thank you for your message, which allows us to complete the file
on this incident. You may be interested to know that the tactical
computer in the Tornado had detected the presence of, and
subsequently locked onto, your hostile radar equipment and
automatically sent a jamming signal back to it. Furthermore, an air-
to-ground missile aboard the fully-armed aircraft had also
automatically locked onto your equipment.
Fortunately the pilot flying the Tornado recognised the situation
for what it was, quickly responded to the missile systems alert
status, and was able to override the automated defence system before
the missile was launched and your hostile radar installation was
destroyed.
Thank you for your enquiry.

1. Why did it show 300mph and not 483km/h
2. NSW Police use the pro laser 3. The laser beam of the Pro laser 3 is 1m round at 300m and reads the target as it approaches directly at them, so where did the plane go, a u turn or something.
3. The pro Laser 3 has a maximum speed display of 200mph.
mmmmmm.....nice story, and the three bears slept soundly with goldilocks and all lived happily ever after

I think it was a Deperdussin originally, flown by the guy who trained Sir Richard Williams
Williamtown is not a high speed low flying area.
We have the FA/18-A, the Lead in Fighter, some PC9s and some fat slow stuff drops in occasionally from other bases. The Tornado is from the UK and not flown in Oz.
No missiles are armed unless over a range. Police in a weapons range would have more pressing concerns than speeding motorists; in fact, I suggest they'd join them.
If it was truly an automated system, chaff and flares would have been released before the pilot could say "doh!". Which they do, and often.

Probably find they are on exercise here. RAAF has never operated this type of jet and never will. The F111 is the only swing wing jet in the system. Even then thier recon packs are built into the body of them so you need to be know what your looking at before you can tell them apart from the others. Simple way is to look at the belly for the pave tack pod which sits under it. this is a bomber, recce jets don't have this system.
