Going batty
Thought I'd put a new hard drive in swmbo's computer while shes away.
Got the mechanics done.
So I'll put xp on it instead of me.
Install screen comes up hit enter, nothing happens, wait awhile.
reboot, nothing , can't access bios setup,
gettin real ratty by now.
hunt around and find a 98se start up disc , so old it don't work.
fiddle around a bit more.
aha - I have the keyboard plugged into the wrong hole duh.
alter bios to boot from cd
its setting up properly now
I recall getting a virus on my computer while setting up xp originally and the only place I went to was the windows update site as part of the installation. How can I prevent this happening this time.

If you are installing XP with SP2, the Windows firewall should keep you safe while you download updates.
If it's an earlier version without the firewall, install a freebie antivirus/firewall programs (I recommend Avast ).
Or you can use the computer you are on now to download the patches/security updates manually, and copy them to the new PC.

Have a look in your local agent for a magazine that has the updates in it. Apart from that, I NEVER allow Micro$oft access to my computer as they continually stuff it up.
