Default Questions about overlay solid timber flooring

    HI all,

I'm reaching the end of my reno and have a few questions about an overlay floor.
I am looking at 130x14mm solid Tas Oak, laid over yellow tongue board.

    1. Should I glue and secret nail?
    2. The floor will be running into a tiled surface which is roughly 15mm higher than the yellow tongue. Should I instead opt for 19mm overlay and sand down to be level, or should I instead use a cork or other underlay to bring the 14mm up to the height (or would the glue make this 1mm difference up anyway)?

    Cheers!

I would glue and secret nail for a solid finished result.
A 1 mm difference in surface height is not even worth spending time on, have you considered the effect of the finish that you are applying to the timber? That may take up a little of the 1 mm difference.

as per droogs comment, is the flooring going to be 1mm off the tile height... or 15mm off the tile height?

    if 1mm don't do anything
for 15mm I'd just put a piece of quad trim against the tiles to hide the step

As it turns out, the mills are only really running Tas Oak in 12mm thick now, so this is going to potentially leave me with 3mm.
Would it be ok to use a 3mm cork underlay between the yellow tongue and the overlay flooring to take up the gap?
Or should I just ramp the glue/something else to the tile edge?

Our tiled floors are 5mm FFL above the timber overlay, never noticed it or caused any issues. A 15mm difference would be a different story.

I think you are over thinking it.
