New woodturner/flutemaker
G'day,
After enjoying playing and restoring wooden flutes (8-key and keyless simple system, Boehm, et. al.) I started making bamboo, pvc and aluminium flutes. Buying/cutting down pre-bored stock was too easy and not quite 'right' (dimension-wise that is).
So, it was inevitable that I would buy a lathe, drill press and assorted bits of turning and boring kit and start trying to turn wood flutes.
Cylindrical Renaissance tenor flutes to begin with. Later I hope to produce conical Irish flutes and Baroque one-key flutes. Making or acquiring reamers will a challenge.
So far my attempts have been moderately successful. Soft/brittle cheap wood blanks being chiefly the problem, splitting during the final turning of the sockets and tenons. Mountain Ash ain't cutting it!
Plus I need a better chuck...
Anyway, good to join this forum to learn a few things and maybe trade some timber blanks.
Cheers,
Vaughan

Thanks crowie.
Strangely enough we are neighbours! I'm on Douglas Street in Faulco
I'll keep plugging away at the wooden tubes with holes and try to make the Katoomba get together.
Learning, learning...
Cheers,
V
