    Question Outdoor furniture?

    Hi Folks,

Just finished cutting up slats for an outdoor table being made from a "mulligan stew" of timbers salvaged from pallets. I was wondering what the best finish would be for this sort of thing?

The table will not be in a covered area so will be exposed to the elements. Where I live the temperature ranges from zero to forty plus and lots of rainfall during the winter months.

what sort of finish would be recomended, I had thought something like marine varnish but am not sure as to how it stands up to the heat.

    regards,

    Himzo.

Himzo, I'd do a search on the decking oil threads as this is a good finish for outdoors. I have tung oil on mine but whilst it gets wet its protected from direct and sunlight for at least part of the day. I recoat every 12 months.

Like you I would be wondering what to finish with but saw this the other day and reckon it needs some further investigation.

    Barnsey,

Thanks for the link, I sent them an E-mail to find out pricing and distributors if any. I have to admit I'm wary of companies that have only been around for a short time.

    vsquizz,

    I recoat every 12 months.
This is the bit I was hopeing to avoid, because I'm a lazy so and so.

Maybe I should make this clear, "I really should re-coat every 12 months" but I generally leave it till the old man comes down and either he does it or rags me bad enough to give me guilty conscious . What I do is 3 coats to get going, 1 coat at a month, 1 coat at 6 months & 12 months then thereafter whan it needs it. Last coat was 2 years ago and its still holding up well. I'd read up on the outdoor oil finishes.
