Here in VIC there are three types, threaded rod tops passed through a hole in the bearer and held down with a nut. Plain bar passed through a hole then bent over the top of the bearer. Finally the ones with a loop on the side which are nailed to the bearer, these are primarily used to replace rotted timber stumps rather than new construction.

Thanks droog. The idea is worth keeping in mind. I see they come in different lengths, too.
