Lets Ban Negative Threads
One man's negative is another man's timely warning
If we ban negative threads, we wouldn't have this thread :?
why? There will always be friction when we rub shoulders, have an opinion or want to change something!
To ban anything is censorship, burning books, limiting expression, and all those most nasty things of this world.
Vote for the negative!!!!
spose.
How could you tell its negative? Sometimes things go all negative and horrid half way through, and then even come back from the brink. If you can't be negative among friends where can ya be?:D
spose so.
One way to prove you're right is disprove everything else anyone says contrary. This is a particularly useful, nay vital tool for correcting others opinions. :)
What the heck is a negative thread?
Isn't that saying "ban anything I don't agree with"?
I reckon people should be permitted to vent and give opinions on whatever subject they feel strongly about and to recognise that others may hold opposing views and opinions.
What I find unacceptable is rudeness and insults directed at other forum members, but let them run with their rudeness for a while so that the rest of us know who these people are. That way we can ignore them and hopefully they will go away and insult someone else on another forum somewhere else, that is if the moderators don't chop them off first.
Have I insulted anyone with this?
One of the reasons I like this forum is the openness, I am a member on a motorcycle forum and once had a thread closed as it might have upset the potential sponsors. The thread was a discussion on recent bad service that I had received from a dealer.
This is a great community that is very open to debate the recent discussion on the stop saw and tradies are some good examples.
I'm with you Rodney.
I was a member of an American-based motorcycle 'safety' forum and I noticed that anyone who expressed an opinion that didn't align with the owner/moderator, was banned from the site.
I dropped out after reading a thread where a discussion was taking place regarding licensing laws in some US states. Some of the 'older' members voiced certain opinions, some of which related to Texas which happened to be the home state of the 'owner/moderator', and were subsequently banned.
From my position, I found the topic very interesting and informative. No one was rude or insulting to another member, but a few blokes commented on how lax the laws were in that state, and were summarily banned from the site.
One bloke posted a link about some idiot on youtube who was riding a bike and performing stunts on a public road. The poster stated that this rider was demonstrating the stupidity of some people and added that the rider was obviously 'skilful' in his abilities, and he wondered why this bloke couldn't use these skills in a controlled environment. Yep, you guessed it. He was banned for posting the link. The reason? The moderator believed the video was not informative and wanted to make an example of the forum member.
The same moderator posted a photo of himself performing a 'wheelie' on his Goldwing, just to show that anyone could do it on almost any bike. Although he did add that this stunt was performed in a controlled environment. Of couse, it was on a public road with a group of bystanders (all in riding gear), looking on. ?
Doesn't sound right? Only in America.:o
I recently re-visited the site only to find that ALL topics are now general chit-chat.
Ban what? Your not kidding are you?
Agree with all the nays, particularly Toyboy's post. :2tsup: I'd agree too with Wongo's too, but that bloke on the tram scares the heck out of me. :D
I think I know what Bob is on about.
It is the whingers whose idea of appraisal is to just find things wrong. For example a new product that perhaps someone can't afford is no reason to bad mouth it.
Those who form little hate groups with no sound basis. Example, I can't cut hand dovetails so I will bag everyone who can. Example, I have no interest in making pens so I will bag and nit pick everyone who does enjoy making them.
Those who have experienced bad service/products but have not approached the service provider/retailer/manufacturer. They are quick to criticise behind the backs of those who can right the wrong.
Not that many examples are found on this forum probably due to the good work done by the moderators.
Negative threads about suppliers or products alerting others so they too don't waste time and money could be considered positive.
:aro-u: :2tsup:
Banning a negative thread is very situational. It depends on the thread, where it's posted, what it's saying, the tone of it and I'm sure there's more that I've not included here. It depends.....
The mods have to make a bit of a judgement call on what the intent of the posters appear to be. If they seem to be just stirring the pot and causing unrest because they are bored, drunk or just plain ornery, that is different to someone who appears to have a genuine bleat about a topic and are getting it off their chests.
Negative threads create debate if they can stay balanced, once someone calls someone else a nazi though it is usually a good time to pull the plug.
Then of course you have trolling posts...
:D but negatives look
Well… I agree with most in here….. Negativity in general isn’t complimentary or desirable …but our perception of which is negative….can differ greatly…one’s person literary skills may not be able to convey their sentiments or opinions as directly or precise as others….
But wait…there’s more….(no not 6 stake knives) …I pose a question to the readers….an offer an apology to boot….
…Not so long ago I read a post that I though was negative…..deciding in my wisdom of not liking to offend anyone…. I made a positive attempt to get them back on track….. quote…
Now here’s a thought.........I think there's too much time spent....worrying about the "Queens English"...or the bushman's "bloody oath's"....AND SOME DON'T SPEND ENOUGH TIME WOODWORKING....come' on u Nancy's ....put your pen's down...tuck your pride back in your pocket....you're not hold n' the chisel or hammer long enough...we want to keep people interested in WOODWORK...not loose them between the lines.......ANYONE WANT TO PICK ON WORDS...TRY THE NEWSPAPERS....I GAVE UP READING THEM....BECAUSE THE "ENGLISH' LANGUAGE IN THAT WASN'T WORTH THE JOB.....THE BUSHMEN USE IT FOR!.....BACK TO THE SHED....
.....love peace makers....they remind me of the aroma of a good woodshed!.......
........you do not need sight to have vision......
........you do not need hands to feel...
........you do not need to be together to be in contact....
........all we need, is to know we are loved!....
Now with the morbid state of curiosity that I indulge myself with…..I thought after posting this thread…I would like to follow the answers… see if I had succeeded in parting a positive influence…..mmm… now where did I post it….lets see…what section did in come under….
<O:p
Oh holy crap….(it was in)
<O:p
NOTHING AT ALL TO DO WITH WOODWORK - Include Drivel & Open SlatherThis forum is for GENERAL DISCUSSION/DEBATE/CONFRONTATION etc. on any topic you like, so long as it has NOTHING TO DO WITH WOODWORK.
So…as I said, firstly it’s an apology to the regular visit’s in that section…. I goofed…
So I offer a solution….perhaps moving the “obvious negativity”…to this section….perhaps request the author of the post to move it voluntarily first….
cheers to all....now I am back to the shed...I missed four days...and feel really misserable.....got to go....need some threapy...lol

Negativity is part of life boys and girls (and all those undecided). Besides, cranky people are quite good fun - it's always great to run across well placed peevishness. I still miss Paul Keating's ascerbic nastiness.
In the same way that you want to throttle bubby, cheerful flight attendants at oh dark hundred in the morning, I think we'd get pretty sick of unrelenting good will. Besides, once you ban the neggies, where does the censorship end? Will we ban those who think that chipboard mounted on bricks makes a nice bookshelf?
Maybe the moderators could give consideration to implementing a "karma" system, where in addition to awarding greenies, someone can award browneyes or some such raspberry, to posters who offend or transgress. Dispute and discussion are the lifeblood of forums, and I'd personally hate to miss out on some of the gems that arise from some initially negative posts.
No, I don't think we need to ban negative posts (or most others) If the worst comes to the worst, just ignore them.
But Jeez I wish some people would self-censor.
Ban negativity?
Little story.
Have a friend who was in admin in a large bank. Bank called an executive meeting to discuss whether lease out their IT instead of doing it in house. Friend raised many objections and was told he was being negative. "We want positive input here". He was the company's Risk Assessor.
As he said "They only wanted to hear what agreed with their ideas."

War doesn't prove who is right. It only proves who is left.
Its the personal attacks that should be moderated.
Once someone stops playing the ball and starts throwing punches at the man.
The content has to stay objective. If not the moderator belts the offending user with a mallet. What one Im not sure. :p
Thats what qualifies for moderation.
Seen this many times the blind leading the blind reminds me of horses with blinkers on.
Those that agree are usually the yes men & woman afraid of loosing their jobs positions etc.
Life is like taking photographs if you walk/talk around the subject you get different perspective.
And the way I see it this forum has members are are retired and happy and rested and in a good frame of mind, as we crankies who are tired from work.
If you think a thread it is negative and don't like it.
Don't participate......simple.
Its not as easy as that though is it, if it was, there wouldnt be threads like this one.
Example.
I think all those that live in Central QLD are all inbred hicks, matter of fact, include the whole of QLD in that.
I know where Bob is coming from with this thread.:(
most of the tradies know
This post is especially for ....
Upon seeing your "weapon"...I will agree with what ever you tell me too!
I'll like what you say...
I'll say what you like...
Your toy is ....too sharp for words... & would make splinters out of my wood...that would!
Your too nice to upset...
Your too kind to offend....
Your too well acquiped to defend yourself
.......you'rs sincerely, respectfully,
.......little old'crawer Kekemo!
Why ban negative threads, where else can you have some fun at someone else's expense. Whingers are a different thing. Maybe we should have a 'Whingers Board' and put there names up there for all to see. Then you can decide whether you wish to communicate with this person or not.
