Mate screwings a snack you just need the right gear ...way easier than nailing if your arm isn't used to hammering all day...
You need square drive screws ...a cordless impact driver and a drill with a 50 dollar tungsten carbide counter sink and your on your way.....
Oh and the spotted gum quote will be dearer than merbau

its 5m x 10m 8 days with 2 of us but there was hard parts we had to make a part that could be removed to get at the spa motors and we also had to make it sit level with the other deck which wasn't level :~ don't know with we are working today its raining but only ightly ,could do with a rest any how,4 more day and it should be finished we are going to roof over the spa now:U

just take the time to get the bearer and joist level and the first few lines of decking strait ,we are puting up the polls today inbeween the rain

its starting to look nice now all painted just need to fit" laserlite sheets" :? anybody know whitch one wont fade (apolo??)getting the one with bit of tinting ,,then fit the sliding door ,rang the the door mob that l got the other door for the housse thinking to match them up needed one that would pass re pool regs ,no can do :( bloody hell l hate running around
then fit clear blinds to the out side zipper type
just a tip then building something like this design it to take the blinds off the shelf 2400 1800 so you dont need extentions

I'm still learning about carpentry and I'm just wondering...in the first picture of the deck with the 4 bearers shown parallel to the house, how come they don't extend to sit directly on the timber stumps at the ends? Is that so that that end piece/bearer matches up with the baseboard for the old deck? Are those 4 bearers simply nailed into that angled end bearer?
And finally, I assume that the joists will run to sit on the existing bearers for the house/old deck instead of using a ledger board?

Spelunx, it took me a week to build one by myself @35 square meters ...and I nailed mine by hand :- ....next one I do I am screwing as mentioned by a previous poster ...with hex heads etc,,....oh by the way , it ran at a cost of $3,500 for materials ....and finished in merbu.....
In melbourne there seems to be short supply of "good" lengths of jarra ....which is another good timber to use, and when you order it (whatever you pick).....specify that NO length be shorter than say 2.4mtrs ....unless your doing steps as well (shorts can be used for this).....otherwise you will get lumbered with lengths too short for your job.......and looking at Spirits pics you will see small gaps between the lengths of merbu ..about a nail thinkness .....there is a reason for this .....merbu and jarra for that matter swells and shrinks with climate change, so be sure to leave a small gap or it will lift up ...
Hmm upon thinking about it a bit more, is it because if the deck was built the way I described, that some of the joists would be hanging with no bearer underneath them at that end with the requirement for joists at 450 centres?
Why can't the parallel bearers simply run to the end stumps and sit fully instead of partially on them, and that end piece be a joist?
A week huh? Did that include ballustrading, painting, oiling etc? I am nailing mine by hand too, planning to buy myself a set of knee pads and a nail pouch this weekend... :DQuote:

Just as a matter of interest, how many nails did you buy for the deck?
I was just going to purchase the biggest bucket of nails from Bunnies, and take it from there...
Hate to run out half-way through the job though, especially because we live 30k's from town!!! :o
I would go to an auction. I did and I got 550LM of mixed hardwood for under a grand. And I love the mixed look. Its very different and looks like the deck has an identity problem with the darker timbers mixed in every now and then with the lighter ones. But thats me, it was a risk and it paid dividends. All looks the same now as its weathered but Im getting out there this weekend and giving it a good clean and seal. Can wait to return it to its former glory.

Just for trivial bordam allow 65 nails per m2 for 90mm wide decking and approx 80 -85 for 67mm
As to how many are in a 5kg tub it has been counted but i have lost the figure and buy 25kg at a time so its no longer of interest cause 25kg goes a long way and is half or less than the kg rate on a 5kg anyway
All joints should be drilled with a pilot and our policy is all nails are predrilled regardless as it minimises the chances of a board later splitting around a nail when it shrinks

Thats a great deal you got there for the decking i gather its 90mm or is it 67mm width....Be careful with mixed hardwoods as it can quite often be the left overs and the durabilities will all be different so you can't use it in bush fire zones either..... You must have had fun picking it up cause my ute wasn't laughing when i put 350lm of 90mm merbau on its back on saturdayQuote:
