Full screen/Part screen

Whilst there is a lot of debate about the aesthetics of the forum, I have a question.

When you first enter the forum there is a black box across the top with "Triton Woodworkers" and another black box on the left with a vertival scroll bar with selections such as Triton Chat Room, Materials etc.

At some stage during a session both of these black boxes disappear and the forum takes up the whole screen (minus the browser toolbars across the top of the screen).

This makes the whole thing easier to read, and, aesthetics again, it looks better.

My question is, what causes this to happen?

Once I know this, I can make it happen every time:U

I mainly use ISpy and Today's Posts.

You are getting to the site via the Triton Woodworkers Website. That site uses Frames which allow websites to appear inside websites.

If you get to this site via www.woodworkforums.com url you won't have that nasty black stuff around the edges.

OK, see what you mean, that doesn't explain what is happening to me though, as I always get to the forum via the Triton Woodworkers site (won't from now on though).

Grunt is correct (as usual with this stuff - developer?). Selecting the forum from that site simply links it into the main frame on that site.

Once you have the forum up from Grunt's link, drag and drop it onto your favourites.

Well Grunt, you may have killed 2 birds with one stone here.

You may have read my posts about the forum not liking IE, at least not on my computers. It would give me an IE error and kick me off if I was logged in, but was OK as a guest.
Had to change to Firefox and that fixed it.
Going to the forum through it's own URL rather than through the Triton Woodworkers site fixed the black bits.
Soooo..............I thought maybe................when I go back to IE will it then kick me off also.
Well so far it hasn't, so maybe that suggestion fixed that mystery as well.
Time will tell.
Must admit would prefer to use only one browser, so would like to get rid of Firefox if I can.
Will let you know how I go.

That saves me a job.

I am running the latest versions of Forefox, Opera and Netscape as well as IE 6 and IE is the only browser capable of running everything in these forums the way it were designed to run.

Netscape will pretty much run everything correctly if you set it up to use the IE rendering engine for the graphics.

Opera runs in close behind Netscape. Actually I quite like Opera, it's a great little browser with one annoying little problem to do with WYSIWYG.

In all tests to date, Firefox has not been able to completely show the forums as they have been designed and so far no amount of tinkering from me has been able to fix it.

I've used Firefox to view this BB since I joined, and have had no problems.

Have you read about what percentage of the year IE leaves your PC exposed to published exploits?????

well have used firefox all along too, and with no problems, firefox is just so good the way it's designed, and i don't get any spyware, i'll never go back to IE, ever, ever , ever......ever!

My Firefox works great too. but I think Neil's point is that in his developing environment he has issues with it. That means we don't see the bad bits because he has already cut them out.

He he he. Had to laugh when I recognised that first image! (I did ask Neil permission to have his site appear in a frame of my site when I created it all those years ago - didn't realise anyone actually used it!) So Big Shed - does it mean it is my fault that you found the Woodwork Forums?

Seriously though, I did indeed get on to the forum through the Triton Woodworkers site, bookmarked it and kept going that way.
It never occurred to me to go direct:doh:

Well, it appears that going to the WWF url direct has fixed both my black surround problem, and more importantly, my IE bomb-out problem.

Have been happily logged in thru IE so far today, and part of last night.

Neil's discovered the joys of being a web developer. Trying to get cross browser compatibility is a nightmare. However, Firefox actually follows the W3C standard much more closely than IE6 does.

For instance to get the Woodwork forums image centred at the top of the page, if Neil were to replace everything between and including the < center > tags with this code the image will centre correctly.

Personally, I've only noticed three real issues with Firefox's display as compared to IE.

• The fonts, sizes & text positioning alter slightly. No biggy.
• The forum's spiel cheque doesn't work under Firefox
• Firefox doesn't display the "Ads by Google" at the top & bottom of every page. (Which is, by itself, enough reason for me to keep on using FF. :D)

Anyone got any other differences they know of?

Skew, not quite sure what you meand by ads, Google or otherwise. With both browsers there are ads displayed at the top, see picture screens.
There is also a link Ads by Google, is that what you mean?

As far as I can see, the only difference is that Firefox displays a bit more text, obviously because of font differences?

Just download the spellbound spell checker add on. It works on anything you type on any website. You get a squiggly line under every miss spelt word as soon as you type it. It corrects some obvious ones automatically as well. It's just like typing in MSWord.

That's because of all the toolbars you've got in IE. I'd like a browser that gives me a totally uncluttered viewing screen of the page I'm on. So far this is as close as I can get. The "Start" task bar reappears when I move the cursor to the bottom of the screen, and I'd like the same thing to happen to the progress bar that's still there. I'd also like to have the same thing happen to the top task bar and the tabs if I'm using tabbed browsing. As for the very top bar, well I don't need to be constantly reminded of who programmed the browser, and I don't need a short description of the page that I'm on since it's right in front of me anyway. The only thing I need is the three buttons on the right, and I'm sure they could be squeezed into the end of the existing bar at the top.

F11 in IE does all of that................

Come to think of it, it also does something like that in Firefox, but it doesn't remove the tabs bar, nor the Start bar

Yeh I've been told that but it does nothing on mine. I might install IE7 and see what it's like.

On the other hand, I might go the other way and install lots of handy toolbars. :D

Removing the "Start" bar is a function of Windows, not the browser.

I use IE6 with SP1 on Windows2000. Works on both IE and Firefox, with the above exceptions.
Have you tried the menu? Click on View then Full Screen...........

Yeh that worked, but the "Start" bar wouldn't come back and I lost all the controls. F11 did nothing and I had to reboot :U . I suppose I'll just stick to what I've got.

Yep. I don't see them. Neither at the top of my page, nor at the bottom.. :D

Now that I think on it, that's thanks to using one of the Javascript permission plugins for FireFox and not FF itself. (I'm directing google's scripts to the bit-bucket.) Still, in my books it's makes for a major improvement... doesn't my screenshot look so much more neater? And as a bonus, there's less scrolling!

As for the spiel chequer, why DL another toolbar clutterer when FF has a decent plugin to do the same job? If only they wouldn't assume that we Aussies use an Americanised dictionary... (and yes, I did DL the Aussie dictionary to go with it! :(( )

Ta Grunt - It fixed Firefox and stuffed up IE and as much as some of you like Firefox it is more important to cater to IE users for now.

Our browser stats currently show IE #1 with Firefox running a very, very distant second. Something like 950 IE users for every 50 Firefox then way down the track to Netscape with 4 users I remember when they used to be so close to IE that it was hard to separate them.

I get the same result on IE and Firefox.

However, on either system all posts by Matrix appear larger than the screen. Is this my computer or ????????

I think you'll find this is because of the size of the graphic that Matrix uses as his signature, although it now appears to fit within my screen, but it makes the left hand side part of the post narrower (where the posters' details and avatar appears). Maybe Neil has used some of them fancy scripts?

Yeh, I've seen that plug in. It removes most of the ads from webpages. Animated ads as well so pages load a lot faster using less bandwidth but sometimes it removes content as well. I haven't installed it because occasionally I might want to see what they're selling. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt Neils hip pocket if you clicked on the ads every now and then either. He's providing the site for free and he doesn't even have a donation button that I can find.

So did I but it still spells in seppo speak doesn't it. miter, meter, labor, etc. I just ignore those and spell proper queens English. It doesn't have a lot of woodwork related jargon either.

You can temporarily allow blocked sites or domains at the click of a button if you really want to see what's being blocked.

Believe me, I didn't install it just to get rid of the ads on this forum. That's just an unexpected bonus; it took me quite some time to notice their absence. But others use this 'puta and tend to go to sites that are prone to malicious scripts. That is why I installed it.

I ended up DLing the UK dictionary instead, and even that has some noticable bastardisations in it. I'd say the base was also compiled by Yanks...

Still, I've never been a forelock tugger and my own brand of English tends to send any halfway decent spell checker into overload. :D Thank Ghu they don't check grammar as well! :rolleyes:
