Being Screwed by local Business'

Well it all started when l got my tax check from the mail before the wife did. l ran to the bank then to a local store and brought my first mig. l also thought that l would buy a generator to use with my new mig and also brought one of them. l was told that a 2.7kva generator would power the mig that l was buying. So l brought it. l get home only to find that l have to go back and buy a 5kg roll of gassless mig wire cause what came with my mig was for gas. Great another 120.00 dollars and l couldnt swap the 5kg gas wire for the 5kg gassless wire. So off l go home and set up my new toy and the generator will power the mig as long as its in very short bursts. So back to the store told the saleman the problem and was told only to weld alittle at a time cant return it to buy a bigger one cause l have used it. After talking to acouple of people l was told that my new generator is only 2kva. All the local tv adds say shop local Shop local my ####.:mad:

You were sold an item that is not suitable for the purported usage.

There is no choice here.

You gotta wear the wire, but not the genny. You could probably return the whole disaster if you got some advice and help.

Don't take this sort of schzt, mate!!

Give the ACCC a ring, get a bit of advice (for no other reason than to make it legit), then go back to the shop, talk to the manager, and if he gives you stick, tell him you have already had advice from the ACCC, and are ready to take it further, as they agreed that you are on the moral high ground.

They sold you something they claimed was rated higher than it was - that is grounds for return on its own.

Hi Mate

is it the gen that is dropping out or your mig that is shutting down from overheating.

Migs generally cant weld without a break, particularly the home user models.

Was the standard wire a part of the package when you bought it? If so then bad luck, they do not have to swap it. (not good business sense though:rolleyes: )

Whats on your reciept for the gen. What model number? Is it the 2k or a 2.7k. Do they sell both? If you have asked for the 2.7 and they have given you a 2 the you are within your rights to get what you paid for.

Just check whats dropping out - the mig or the genset:confused:

Give everyone you know their number, and ask them all to ring this shifty mob.

Make sure they all ask about the exact same unit/s you purchased. With particular attention about the refund issue.

You can take it back & get a refund as long as the goods are still in a salable condition IE; you haven't smashed it with a hammer or painted it pink.
Don't worry abnout the fact that you have removed the packing, that is their problem.

Well guys thanks for all the advice. l made afew phone calls sent afew faxes and went back to the shop to talk to the guy. All he did was call the police and have me removed from the shop and the police told me that its a cival matter and they dont want to get involved in it. Anyway my wifes brother will buy the gen off me and use it for camping. All this #### just to weld some bloody gates up to keep other peoples bloody dogs from ####ing on my front lawn. l will not be spending a cent in this town again.
I wish l had the balls to take his double shop front doors and use them as my front gates. Regards to all Riverland.

I'd be letting as many people know as possible. Let the guy experience word-of-mouth advertising!

Riverland, have you called the Office of Consumer & Business Affairs? I am absolutely certain that if it is exactly as you say you possibly have a case to return the generator.

However the caveat here is if it is exactly as you stated. Don't take offence, I am just aware that peoples' versions change AFTER they are unhappy with a purchase. If you are sure you have been wronged I urge you to contact the above office. Businesses which defy the law need to be held accountable.

Generator manufacturers can be shifty too, I have a 700w genny (I think, it's about that without going out to have a look) but the fine print states 500w continuous.
Like a lot of product there are always the start up figure to lure the punters in.
I only bought mine for camping and a few odds and sods and it is more than adequate, but it is definitely not 700w, or is it????
I was aware of this when I bought the unit.
I used to have a FIAT 500 with a speedo that went up to 100mph HAAA hahahaha.....................

It stinks about what happened. The problem is that this kind of behaviour is becoming more prevalent and as the good aussies we are, we take it like a man and move on.

Holy crap batman.

Definitely deal with this guy through the consumer protection agencies, and contact Today Tonight or ACA or sim - they love this sort of thing, and it is a way of legitimately making it well known that this guy should not be in business.

Calling the cops - you have got to be joking. What did you do - throw the gen at him? (Course that would have been tempting).

Thanks for all the advice guys which l took and have decided to follow through with it. l brought the gen and welder off the same store and told him that l wanted the gen to run the mig so bugger him he can fix his mistake. l have phoned, sent emails to everyone that l think might be able to help even my motherinlaw and god help him if she comes up to his store. l called the local paper here and they just said that they cant print anything bad about a local busines. l am going to put a big billboard sign up out the front of my house exposing this business. Regards to everyone who has given advice l would of let this matter go if it wasnt for everyones advice. Well except the advice of welding his front doors shut.

Fair enough comments about the other side of the coin, but when l walk into a stop and say that l want a mig and that l want a generator to power that mig l expect to be sold the right thing to do the job. Problem with country town is that if your not a local then your second class, but all these country towns forget that its people like me who move to there towns and send my money in there towns and help them servive. Going by the book is fine when dealing with normal helpful people , who have just gotten their wires crossed.

But the guy/company is begging for special treatment from irate customers. Like the ones you are going to have contact this mob asap.:D

Nothing worse then a retailer who takes your hard earnt, then tries to belittle you with their own form of the rules when things don't go their way.

You don't need balls when dealing with rippoff merchants, you just need incentive which you have plenty of at this stage. I smelt a rat from your first post about this shifty business operator.

Judging by the way he used the law to remove you, his done it a few times before. And knows it's the only way out of a tight spot.... like most A holes after doing wrong.

I guess the lesson to be learnt from all this, is that random acts of business premises vandalism. May not be so random after all.:rolleyes:

Hmmm, I wonder why anyone thinks a business owner, especially in a country town where everyone knows everyone else's business, would go out of their way to rip someone off. They wouldn't last long if they did that. It's not in a business owner's interests to do it.

I also find myself wondering what happened to get the cops called in? Things must've gotten pretty heated.

After reading everyones reply's and advice and looking at all sides best l can l think that maybe l should not of stood in his shop and made sure that the other people herd what was going on as the shop owner did ask me to drop my voice or he would call the police in which l replyed here is my xxxxxxx phone call them. Look all l wanted was to a mig and a gen with my tax money and weld everything in sight at home. lm happy with the welder, l dont even have a problem with having to buy wire, but l do have a problem with spending 1500.00 more to get a bigger generator. The shop owner new that l had no idea of generators and he said that the one l brought would run the mig. All l wanted him to do was take the generator back and l give him some more money for a bigger one. lm not asking for blood god l cant even give myself a decent welding flash with the one l have. $899.00 for mig, $900.00 for Generator, $250.00 for helmet, $30.00 for Gloves, $140.00 for Gasless Wire, $20.00 for extra tips thats $2239.00 in his store, Pluss he ordered some extra linners in for me. Be buggered if lm picking them up. He stuffed up not me. Anyway being new to welding and this really toped my day off l thought that l would use an extion cord and do some welding on the wifes car for her. We are waiting for a tow truck to take the car to the auto elec. Didnt know to take the battery out. Now nothing turns on and when wife finds out not even god will be able to help me. Anyone got a spare room to rent before 5pm today:D .

Anybody know a good funeral director around Riverland?:eek:

Silent: Not attacking small towns. Just stating a few of my own experiences living in one. When i moved into a little country town approx 10 years ago. Whenever i ask/ed a local who was the best business for this or that.

The reply was and still is, don't go there you will get ripped off they are shonky etc.

(Random Example)

A motor mechanic can overcharge without losing many customers. Because he will let the little things slide (for locals)when rego comes round...like my neighbours leaking muffler for the past 7-8 years. But the very same mechanic will all but use force, making sure my neighbours car is serviced on time.

The same mechanic has no problem retesting a vehicles front end(at rego time),using a length of 4x2 only 4 months after he himself repaired it.... cuz the car owner was a newbie in town.

Having my brakes relined, and the very next day nearly running off a cliff when the brake pedal bottomed out after 10-12 desperate pumps.:eek:

Then returning the next day to the mechanic..Knew i shouldn't have used them cheap&nasty pads mate was his reply.

Forget about a sorry, you and your family could have been killed etc.

Anyway little towns aside. @ holes have been known to operate in many different locations.:D

Tip:Vehicle registration inspections are for the vehicle, not the owners of them. So if needed don't be shy to pull the inspector up on that issue...I do all the time.:D

Thats right mate!!!. I didn't bother fixing all the faults before bringing my car in for you to inspect...cuz thats one fee your are going to be earning.

After the last hour of getting lots of GBH Of The Ear(Greivious Bodily Harm) from my wife over my welding mistake on her car l was thinking aint fuses supposed to blow in the car to stop damage to the car. Looks like l will have to invest into a new couch tomorrow as l am sure that l will be calling it bed for awhile:eek: . Problem is l spent all my money on what caused this problem in the first place. Anyone wanna buy a welder so l can buy a new couch:D .............

Having spent 16 years living in Sydney, I know who I would trust more between a city mechanic and a country one!

My point is that country towns are small communities and everyone knows everyone - except you! It's like walking unannounced into a room full of old mates (even if half of them hate each other) and asking them where the best fishing spots are. They're hardly going to tell you.

I'm with you, Riverland. I've dealt with some of these small town crooks. Where I live we have a choice of small town and Brisbane or Gold Coast City. Whenever I purchase anything big or to do with tools or machinery, I go to the city.

I once had a run in with a local mower place when I bought a Stihl weedeater. I didn't have the money at the time and it was the last one, so I put it on Lay-by with a $100 deposit, telling the shopowner that I'd be back in two days. When I went back he'd sold it, and he told me that I'd have to wait two weeks for a new one. When I sparked up and had a few words with him he agreed that when a new one came in he'd deliver it personally. Three weeks later he did, but to someone else. This someone else was honest enough to ring me and ask "why have I got a weedeater on my front porch with your name and address on it?"

All through this, the shopowner blamed me for being some sort of a whingeing customer and unreasonable and so on. He thought it was completely reasonable and within his rights to sell a weedeater that he had held on layby for me, and he even tried to say that I'd given him the wrong delivery address.

Well guys l am abit red faced today for two reasons. First from my wife and second because my wife went and seen the guy who sold me the generator and it cost another $350.00, but l now have what l wanted all along. A genny to run my small home mig:D. As for the wifes car that l electricuted almost to death well l now can say that after talking with the auto elec l have a good understanding of the 12 volt and 240 volt system now. Now l just have to wait for the car to be fixed and somehow pay for it. lnsurance did not want to know about it. :rolleyes:

Power from a welder can do some strange things to cars electronics and find it's way into normally inaccessible places, not via the fuses.
Bit like RF, does not require a return path to perform its magic:rolleyes:

If we group the welder fiasco as one, we have the car as two.

If you have a right (and you did), you must also remember to contain anger, at least on the outside. Otherwise you just put up the barriers to any hope of effective communication.
