Indio, California is about 130 miles east of Los Angeles, in the desert and very close to sea level in elevation. (Perhaps even a bit lower than sea level.)
The Saturday high temperature in Indio, CA was 122°F or 50°C. Death Valley, CA was 125°F or almost 52°C.
I won (yes, WON!) a trip to the States about four years ago now. The prize was return airfares for two, five nights accommodation in Hollywood, two tickets to see Ben Harper and Jack Johnson in concert at the Hollywood Bowl, and one thousand (Aussie :() dollars spending money.
Given that it cost me nothing to get there, and given that the promoter allowed us to pick our arrival and departure dates, we decided to splurge and hired a convertible Mustang and drove it to Vegas to extend our trip a little.
I had wonderous visions of driving through the desert on the wrong side of the road, top down, music up, in a sports car. :cool:
Truth was it was 114 degrees F (mid-40's?) and stinking hot.
The top came back up and the air-con got cranked.:(
That's the problem with convertible vehicles. The desert has the sunshine for frequent use with the top down but the desert heat makes one want to put the top back up.
How far is Indio from the Big Thermometer at Baker?

'Baker' seems an appropriate place for it....
When I drove through there it wasn't much more than a truck stop.
OK I didn't exactly drive through I stopped and had my picture taken next to the big thermometer, it's a weakness of mine...:o

The big Murray Cod at Tocumwal is the first big anything commissioned in Australia (according to the people of Tocumwal). It was not the first erected as someone else beat them to it. It's not as big as the one at Swan Hill but it's a lot more realistic.

It's easy to get the two routes confused. I mean once you've seen one desert rock, you've seen them all.
Recently, SWMBO and I were returning from Phoenix. SWMBO says, "Let's stop in Baker for lunch." (The Greeks is much better than the Thermometer.) I said, "Wrong road. wrong trip, wrong city." The argument continued until SWMBO looked at a map.

The Big Rocking Horse is located Gumeracha at "The Toy Factory". I believe that the Big Rocking Horse was closed & people can no longer climb up to the top viewing platform. It was deemed a safety risk by the insurance companies so they hoiked the insurance premiums through the roof.:mad: The only recourse was to close it down.:(Quote:

I think you are right; it was a Simca, but it wasn't mine - it belonged to a mate. But I do remember that it had no guts; it would grind to a halt on really steep hills. The picture was taken in 1963.
