Covid Logic - Food for Thought

Me at the Supermarket:

Why is there plastic on the payment keypad?

Cashier: to protect people from Covid.

Me: but isn’t everyone touching the plastic keypad the same way they would the regular keypad?

Cashier: no words. Confused look.

Me: Why Don’t you pack the grocery bags anymore?

Cashier: Because of Covid -19 to reduce the spread of catching or spreading the virus.

Me: But a shelf packer took it out of a box and put it on the shelf, a few customers might have picked it up and put back deciding they Don’t want it, I put it in my cart then on the conveyor belt, YOU pick it up
to scan it... But putting it in a bag after you scan is risky??

Cashier: no words, confused look

Me at the drive through

Server: (holds a tray out the window with a bag of food for logical friend to grab)

Me: why is my bag of food on a tray?

Server: so I don’t touch your food because of Covid.

Me: didn’t the cook touch my food? Didn’t the person wrapping my food touch it and then touch it again when placing it in my bag? Didn’t you touch the bag and put it on the tray? Didn’t you touch the tray?

Server: no words. Confused look.

Me in society

Society ; If you cough or sneeze do it in your elbow or sleeve,

Also society : Don’t shake hands or hug anyone or you will spread the virus.. To greet people do an elbow tap instead.

Me : Elbow tap ? Isn't that where you tell people to sneeze or cough? into their elbow? Now you want people to tap each other with that elbow wouldn't it be safer to sneeze into elbow and shake hands like we did before Covid

Me at a restaurant:

Hostess: OK, I can seat you at this table right here (4 feet away), but I will need you to wear a mask to the table.

Me: what happens when I get to the table?

Hostess: you can take off the mask.

Me: then it is safe over there?

Hostess: yes.

Me: are those fans blowing above the table? Is that the air-conditioning I feel? Is the air circulating in here?

Hostess: no words. Confused look.

You are not allowed to stand and drink at the pub you have to sit down.
But at the shopping centre you are not allowed to sit down, all the chairs are roped off.
Who thinks this up?

Life is hard for logical people right now.

We are being raised without the ability to process and execute logic I can't take the credit for this as I copied & pasted it but just thought it sums up the current restrictions so well.

*groan*

Whilst I appreciate that this is supposed to be a joke, it's just intentionally playing dumb with good precautions that we adhere to in the difficult situation many are living with to a greater or lesser extent.

Really? So you didn't write them up, but endorse them as valid logical arguments?

I'm no expert in public health, but am happy to have a crack at applying a bit of logic to some of the above restrictions.

Why is there plastic on the payment keypad? To allow it to be cleaned at more frequent intervals without damaging the equipment. Also to cover any gaps and edges which take more effort to clean effectively.
Why Don’t you pack the grocery bags anymore? The less people handling your products, the lower the risk of transmission.
why is my bag of food on a tray? The less people handling your products, the lower the risk of transmission.
If you cough or sneeze do it in your elbow or sleeve? What sort of idiot attempts to cough on the outside of their elbow? What was that you said about logic?
You are not allowed to stand and drink at the pub you have to sit down. Perhaps people can't be trusted to keep a distance of 1.5 m when standing around a bar.
But at the shopping centre you are not allowed to sit down, all the chairs are roped off. Because people shouldn't be congregating at the shops. Also, at the time the shopping chairs were roped off, no-one was in pubs at all from what I recall.

Now it's your turn. Knowing that you have been raised with the ability to process and execute valid logical arguments, try and come up with another plausible explanation for each of the statements you shared. It's not really that hard, you just have to choose not to be cynical.

At time like these Logic seems to be in particularly short supply - eg the risk issues surrounding this.

The one that really irks me is, why does the whole family need to go and do the essential shopping?
I can understand a mum can't just leave kids at home, but when I see older kids, grandma and aunty tagging along as well ARRGGGHHH!

Common sense ain't very common nowadays. :D

The "cut & paste" reference was written by whoever wrote the original & isn't necessarily the view of the OP; I've seen this joke before. The terminology would indicate that it originally came from the US; a country whose citizens a often perceived to have a somewhat skewed understanding of logic and common sense...

“Cashier- confused look.” That’s not the look of someone who’s just realised he/she has been outwitted by a superior intellect, it’s the look of someone bored with hearing the same smart ar*se BS from the same type of person 50 times a day and has decided to just shut up and do what she/he is paid for...

Yes, you’re right Chief. I apologise for the way I responded. My brusque response wasn’t justified . Sorry KB. The last day of a tough week, and I let my grumpy side get the better of me. I could, and should have conveyed the same frustration with the sentiments of the joke without being rude.

I thought "common sense" was an oxymoron these days, along the lines of "army intelligence"??

I'm just waiting for "consequences" to be deleted from the Oxford English Dictionary, having fallen into disuse.

Just thinking about the modern attitude to risk. Think back to WW2; "doing your duty" with no prospect of personal gain, a VERY good chance of dying a horrible and painful death in the process, all to protect your unseen countryfolk from a foreign power. "Doing the right thing"

Now people baulk at a 1 in 100,000 chance of a blood clot (not even always fatal) when asked to "do the right thing" by the community in relation to COVID?

Pre Covid - if you wear a mask in a bank you might be arrested.
During Covid - if you wear a mask in a bank you might get served.
During Covid - if you do not wear a mask in a bank you might be arrested, or at the very least fined!

I am not a betting man but reckon those odds are far, far better than the 1 in 10 of dying of Covid - hence have had both shots of AZ and got my certificate to prove it. :2tsup:

How many times have you been to a bank this year?
for it's been once, and they told me to attend to it on-line!

I Can not remember the last time I was in a bank.
I live about 10km from Melbourne CBD (long time since I was there too) and many of the bank branches in the are have closed, the big four + Bendigo Bank.

My dad has used the ANZ for as long as I have known. His local branch has now closed and he was told to go to Chadstone shopping centre. At 90 years of age, and having trouble walking, Chadstone is no longer the shopping centre it was when it opened in 1960. They have expanded so much even I do not want to go there.
