I’ve recently become a fan of Tung oil as a finish. But the price at Bunnings or Carbatec is absurd.
Can anybody recommend a more cost effective source.?
cheers,
Peter

Hi Peter,
Here is the page from sceney's Oils. They sell Tung Oil for about $20/litre. Works well in my hands.
Our Distributors - Sceneys Paint and Hardware Provider, Australia

Got my Sceneys Tung Oil at the local Farm Produce supplier.
Thanks,
I’ll try our local farm supplies and see if they have it.
Cheers,
Peter
There's also MinWax Tung Oil Protective Finish. The tin claims there is some Tung oil in it.
When you can't smell it, time for the next coat. #1 is matt, #2 & #3 are satin and #4 is water-wet glossy on the woods that I carve.
I saw it used on walking canes and hiking sticks to good advantage.
:) know that feeling! Feast Watson $111 4ltrs over here! or $48 for 1ltr same company.
If using Tung Oil on food prep items and are for sale, remember that it is derived from nuts and may have issues with those that are sensitive to nuts....which one does not always know of.
Hi Crowie,
You can get Organoil hard Burnishing Oil from Timbecon for $130/4 litres or $27.90/litre, or Pure Tung Oil for $44.9+0/l or $149.00/4 litres.

Rob
+1 for Sceneys. :2tsup:
It's good stuff and you'll be hard pressed to find cheaper. It has been my favourite finish for years, although I use it to make my own blend.
According to Sceney's website the only place in Sydney is in Hornsby. Other than that, the nearest seems to be Mittagong, Moss Vale, or Queenbeyan. I'm doubtful about Mittagong because the Home Hardware up here had a few Sceney's products, but no Tung. The only Tung Oil they had was Zinsser (USA product) and apart from not being able to get the lid off any of the 6 cans (all had leaked and dried fast), it seemed to have other additives in it, for about $40/litre.
When we went to Kyneton earlier this year we were going to try at get some at Great Outdoors Albury, but Christos said they didn't have any.
Hi,
You could try FeastWatson | Where To Buy. They have quite a few vendors listed. $40/litre. Also, you can get pure Tung Oil from Organoil, but I don't know what the price is.
Regards,
Rob
I have been buying mine down in Cowes, Vic. Primarily because it was the first place I came across it (couldn't believe the price at the time!) and, as I have an annual pilgrimage past the place, I've never bothered looking to source elsewhere.
Mind you, I shouldn't think it'd be too hard to get 'em to mail it at me...
Thank you gents.
I rang Greg Sceney of Sceneys Finishes who was very helpful.
He said I can buy the 1lt Tung Oil direct from them and that it can be posted;
so for about $100 I can get 3 x 1ltrs cans delivered.
Cheers Peter
I'll go one with you.
I sourced very good quality Tung Oil and Orange Oil (Citrus Terpene) from the Wood Works in Sydney and it was delivered to me here in Vic without issues. The current prices are Tung Oil $206.93 for 5 litres and $195.48 for 5 litres of Orange Oil. You can check their website as they have smaller sizes and do sell a lot of these products. Cheers,
Paintman
Just a followup on the purchase of Tung Oil....
I bought 3 x 1Ltr of Pure Tung Oil from Sceneys for $26 each delivered [it may have cost a little more if I'd only bought the one or two]...
Great price and pretty good service... Cheers, crowie
