Not really a relivent forum section for this....
Was pondering how to get credit card facilities at markets so people can buy things without finding an ATM. Can you still get those old style swipe-the-form type things?
What about those APs where you can recieve payments using you phone somehow. Nearly need a new phone anyhow.
What else?
I know you can get wireless credit card readers from the banks, but I guess the merchant fees are high (you would have to talk with you bank/er about that)
paypal maybe?

You can get a device that plugs into a smart phone or tablet that will read credit cards. There was a promo where you could get the reader free. Not sure if it is still available.

Think also about BitCoins. I have heard of several business's that are starting to accept them.
Just for the record, I do not have BitCoins or know enough on how to use them - but I have been told it is easy to do.
Value of one bitcoin is over $700 today. DaveTTC, you are thinking of Square, which was yanked from Australia as the banks closed shop (yes, its a cartel).
There is one option of Kaching from CBA.
Mobile swipe machines are available, but the last I checked the fees were hair bleedingly usurious. (I used to sell Lego via the markets)

Evanism - I thought the paypal thing is still going. Have not heard of square. It is a paypal app for Apple or android and the device plugs into your 3.5 mm jack on your phone and uses your phone 3G or 4g if you have it.

My work has wireless Eftpos machines which work off the mobile phone network. They are from one of the big four banks and are $34/month rental - plus any transaction fees I guess. I have no idea if that is a standard rate or just applicable to this company.
To answer your original question; yes you can still get the old fashioned swipy things. Only last week our local Woollies suffered a computer meltdown which completely severed the banking interweb system; no Eftpos, cash or CC only with the swiper; only problem being of course they didn't know where the bulk cc slips lived; and most of the younger staff had never seen one outside of an old movie.Quote:

Basically what CT said is true, however, the Art & Crafts group I belong too has access to the CC swipe machine and we were told about 12 months ago that the bank is going to withdraw them or increasing the merchant and processing fees for their use. So far nothing has happened. We were told that if withdrawn it would be replaced with either a wifi version or plug-in version at an additional cost.:o
The short of it is that unless you have a large turnover it would not be cost effective. It's just another grab by the banks for your cash.:no:

I think they charge a little more 2.2% but no monthly fees no machine hire etc. The little reader may have an initial outlay price.
You can set up your phone / device with standard sale items etc. It is possibly one of the simplest options available. That does not entail monthly fees
There was an update recently so I presume it is still a viable proposition.

Hi All,
Quite a while bank, I was told, if you had a Bendigo Bank A/c, they wood lend you a card machine??? whatever you call them, & there was no charge.
Thing may have changed by now, but it is worth looking into.
