a show of solidarity

needless to say the regular posters here make up a pretty tight knit community and would probably even consider each other mates :) . after reading about Mick's swmbo, I found my self wondering if there could be some mechanism for notifying others of life changing events in the the members lives.
In the firefighters union, we have an elected "public information officer" who among other things notifies the union body (by email) of births, deaths, injuries requiring hospitalization, marriges, and whatever else seems appropriate. The union membership may then send flowers, etc individually if they feel like it.
Natrually it would have to be much less formal here, but i thought that we could organise a group email list that anyone who wants could put thier name on. then when someone hears word of a life changing event, an email would be shot out stating the nature of the event and the address which cards, flowers, etc could be sent. This vehicle would kind of rely on all you guys who are buddies in real life (not just this forum) and talk on the phone, etc.
Any better ideas? Without bieng a morose jerk, we have some brilliant contributing members who are getting up there in years and it sure would be a shame for them to just dissapear without a strong show of solidarity from this great group. :)

Couldn't the Announcements, or perhaps the Birthday Greetings forum be used for this purpose. However, since not many of us are over 70, and we should have a life expectancy of over 80, hopefully the question won't arise for for quite a few years.

I've often thought the same. One could shuffle off this mortal board, never to be seen again, and no-one the wiser. I would wager too that the 'other half' of the crook, incapacitated (or worse:eek: ) BB member would never get an inkling of the genuine depth of feeling from the 'community' here, as there is no channel for this.

My wife simply thinks that it is wierd that I chat to a bunch of strangers about woodwork, however. :(

Not sure I see the need for such a vehicle personally. All members are able to post details of personal matters or events should they wish to do so and many do.
Yes there is a club spirit here and some members know others quite well and i also think the things that matter are brought to the other members' attention.
All members are generally respected by the others without the need to introduce a personal welfare or counselling column and i for one do not wish to come in here to read the obituaries thank you. I can just see it now,,,,,,,,,,

Sorry but thats not for me. I know the idea is well intended but it could end up with people feeling obliged to send cards, flowers, gifts, etc etc simply because others are doing so and the whole thing could get out of hand.
In my opinion the forum already facilitates best wishes and thoughts and announcements to be made by anyone who wants to and to that end doesnt require embellishment.

I have found the Americans the most generous and over the past nearly 100 years the best allies the west have ever known. Think how many yanks died in Europe and the Pacific wars when they could have stayed neutral.

It's a nice idea but logistically not practical. Besides, it has gone off-topic so quickly it wouldn't get support. It had as good a reception as my Safety Forum suggestion.

Sorry David, didn't mean to imply that :o . Remember, you only put your name on the EMAIL list if you want to , and i expect that there will be enough people that no one would feel obliged to send flowers.
It definately will not become a bb forum for personal issues or anythig else.

Picture this hypothetical situation. Scott wongo and co. have another kid. he is definately not going to run straight to the bb to anounce the new arrival durring the first few days,, but if a fellow bb member who is a friend hears about it and shoots off a group email with the info and address of the hospital, I'm sure a few bouquet's of flowers and cards with inapropriate jokes would follow :D . His swmbo would then begin to forgive the amount of time he spends on the bb. ;)

since we definately don't want our address posted on the bb, it probably would only be an email thing for those regulars who wish to join. Whattya think comrades :D .?

Yes, it is something that has crossed my mind. People disappear off the air waves and you do wonder whether something unpleasant (or pleasant I suppose) has happened. Not everyone carks it from old age...

The only thing is that if the person has contacts with forum members outside the forum, then they will probably post anyway, for example when John posted regarding Bob's impending nuptials.

well, i guess i should consider this idea well and truly shot down. ;) as a last straw, if anyone reads this in the future and thinks it is a good idea, I'll volunteer to be the hub of the email dissemination. I reckon on a voluntary basis it is an idea with more than enough merit Ryan.

On a serious note, an acquaintance passed away in his prime a few weeks ago. I found out recently that he was a bit of a woodworker and his wife is considering having a garage sale.

My first thought was that I hoped she wasn't going to flog off a whole lot of good gear for next to nothing, not realising what it was all worth. I offered through a mutual friend to go around and have a look and give her an idea of what it might be worth. I'm sure that my motives were good but I felt a little strange about it because, if the positions were reversed, I would think that there might be an ulterior motive at play. Maybe he wants to come around and try and rip me off by telling me it's worthless crap and offering to give me a good price, or maybe he wants to get all the best bits himself. And then I started to wonder if maybe that was my real agenda, and I was keeping it from myself so that I wouldn't be horrified that I could stoop so low.

I haven't got the truth out yet but I think if I get drunk enough tonight, I might fess up. Anyway, she hasn't taken me up on the offer yet, so if you're listening up there mate, your goodies are still safe. For the moment....

That happened to an aqaintance some years ago, he was an avid fly fisher like myself and I knew what he had.
I spoke to the widow and told her that I could take care of it for her as there was nothing I wanted but too late, some bastard from a fly fishing club told her that Sage 3 rods were worth sod all but he would give her $50 each for them just to help out, and another $40 for the Hardy fly reels.
I knew who it was and gave him a fair spray but he just couldn't have cared less, this was an opportunity just too good to pass up.
I really felt like decking this mongrel but what would it prove, given that he was a copper too.

All jokes aside, I reckon that kind of thing is a very low act and I don't know how people can sleep at night having ripped someone off.

Actually, what I would be inclined to say to her if any of it was good gear would be to save it for the grandkids. All his offspring are girls but one has just given birth to a son (I think) and the old man missed it by a matter of days, which is a shame in itself. I know how attached I am to my Grandfather's tools, of which I have but a few.

On the subject of checking values of tools. I had a mate (note past tense) that did what Iains mate did and ripped off a recent (at the time) widow. He purchased about $30,000 worth of machinery for about $2000.

I always suggest when asked to put a value on something to get 2 quotes from those that purchase second hand machines.

Saves a lot of grief and you keep friends. :)

I don't think we need to worry about our tools in the future, they will be redundant. Global warming is coming; no trees; no time to play; the future generation will need to spend all their time foraging for food and wondering who is going to provide their pension. (I must be in a depressed mood this morning :eek: )

....and with rising sea levels they had better be good swimmers!
