I have this fancy new welding apron so thought it would protect me from welding and grinding sparks.
Well clearly I'm just too portly and the new apron still doesn't quite cover my chest because while using an angle grinder today I set myself on fire! :oo:

Just between the arm pit and breast top pocket.
No damage though as I had a cotton teeshirt on underneath.
You might need to get yourself a welding jacket or a suit of armour. Just as well it did not burn a hole in the pocket.
I think it was a case of - I'm wearing this fabo apron and nothing can get me so I just lost concentration. . . . and whamo !Quote:

When I was a young bloke I was a smoker and I had a box of matches went up in my shirt pocket from a welding spark.That caused a bit of excitement!
Bob I've also got a bit of a portly gut so what I've done with my apron is shortened up the neckstrap so as to pull the bib a bit further up towards my chin. That seems to deter the sparks a bit better.
BobL: I don't care what you were wearing "underneath." It would be a hell of a thing to write on your epitaph that you cooked yourself in a carving project. Just how stupid is that? Get some serious leather welding clothes.
I get laughed at for the gear I wear for stone cutting (stone cut relief prints.) There isn't a mosquito on earth that can get at me.
My father does it all the time. The problem is, he has issues with his legs, so he sits on the ground while welding. Legs apart, with the piece he is wlding between the legs. You can imagine where the holes are.....
Hey I've got a shirt just like that one, but mine doesn't have a hole in it. The shirt is easy enough to replace but you aren't Be safe.
Now that's just not good.
Got my overalls for welding course and after the course not used them since as I have not done any welding since doing the course.
It is bettter to be protected even for just one day.
Occupational hazard, I'm afraid. I don't often catch on fire, but I've seen some good ones.
One guy had the whole front of his shirt burned off, he had 2nd degree burns before he realised.:o:doh:
Another one lost one leg of his jeans before he could be put out. :C
These were the worst I've seen, generally you figure out you're burning before it gets that far.
I too have been there, grinding away, concentrating on what I'm doing then thinking mmm that's getting a bit hot, I bet I'm on fire, stop look and yep, I'm on fire as I madly pat out the fire, usually just a hole as per Bob's pic.

been there done that mainly with 380 amp welder. john.
The bouncing blob of weld down the boot top is also good for a laugh - at least if you are an onlooker and not trying to get the boot & sock off in a hurry, while yelling & jumping up and down. DAMHIK.
I 'usually' burn my clothes by resting them on a recently welded piece, nothing too serious - then there was the time I managed to thread the end of a MIG wire through a tiny hole in my welding glove and into my finger - nasty smell, burning leather & finger - you don't get a blister, just a bit of brown & black crust that peels off a few days later.
The blob of weld metal down the open bit of the shirt sleeve (cuff) just as you are seconds away from completeing a vertical up and it sits there melting your elbow, that's fun as well.....Quote:

Watched my son set fire to his jeans grinding one day. Was waiting for him to wake up he was on fire. Nearly wee weed myself laughing. Fancy standing behind a grinder with all the stuff going over himself. He did not laugh with me tho. Wonder why?

We always had the bucket of water nearby. Setting fire to the surrounds or yourself just seemed to come with the territory.
A while ago, I had my shirt go up like a struck match.....there was an accumulation of grinder waste on my shirt and a spark from the oxy got it and it burned a big hole in my shirt.
I still remain convinced that rap dancing was invented by welders.

Yep I've seen that one.
A boiler maker grinding away merrily , not having his top button done up.
A smallish piece of hit metal breaks away from the end of the job being ground, bounces off this & that ( as it bounces he turns his head to watch it) and goes straight down the front of his shirt.
Drops the grinder, jumps back with an OOWH , takes several steps backward shaking his shirt (that was tucked in).... still hot metal fragment continues and lodges in the crutch of the trousers ..... he spins arround grabs his crutch with another OOWH ...... bends his knees and shakes his ass till the metal tumbles down his trouser leg...... which causes him to stand on one leg and shake the other. .....the still hot piece of metal then falls into the open top of his boot. .... thinking quick without hesitation he drops to the floor in the splits with his head pressed to one knee so he can reach into his boot and remove the metal. ....sticks the fingers of his ungloved hand into the boot flicks out the matal (finally) onto the ground but burns his fingers ..... lets out another OOWH..... this causes him to recoil flat onto his back shaking the hand over his head.... BUT..... he finds hot metal on the ground behind his back. .... which causes him to arch his back and jump straight to his feet .
at this point he runs out of the workshop ( stage left) to get first aid for his multiple burns.
Look at any of the thriller era jackson coriography and you will see this theme.
Some would say that the coriographer was a genius...... I disagree.... he must have been a welder.
