Brand names

My wife always has a go at me that after 10 years I still hoover the floor instead of vacuuming. I then recoil with esky and gladwrap. So I started thinking of brand names that we use quite acceptably with the generic product. I'm not looking for names that are just very common (eg McDonalds, Microsoft) but names where we use the brand name but don't really care if we get the brand product or not. Bacardi and coke is a good example. If I ordered a Bacardi & Coke, I'd be annoyed if it was generic white rum that I got, but probably wouldn't mind if it wasn't actually coca-cola.

Here's my list:

hoover - vacuum
esky - plastic box to keep food/drink cool (what is the generic name?)
gladwrap - clingfilm/ clingwrap
coke - cola
velcro - hook and loop fastener
walkman - portable tape/cd player
sellotape - sticky tape
xerox - photocopier
band-aid - plaster

some ones more relevant to this BB
tarmac - bitumen
allen key - hex head wrench
perspex - clear plastic sheet
masonite - hardboard

What a great list. Here are some of the thoughts I had:

1. Some are so ingrained that at first I didn't believe they really started off as a brand name.
2. Some items you have to use the brand name because you don't know what the real word is (eg what is a frisbee really called?)
3. Some are old names that were big in their time but have now passed
4. Some items even have more than one common brand name (must have been some intervention from ASIC about monopolies)

We call them scallops :D

Or sometimes Tasmanian scallops

when we arrived here and my son was plunged into the Australian school system he had to learn a new vocabulary. When he went back to uk a few years later he then had to unlearn it.

just a few corrections here Jackie condom = franger ,rubber is a Yank term

We still have an exhaust pipe after the muffler. trainers = joggers ,runners is another Yank term. trunks = boardies ( aka boardshorts) bathers is a very old Aussie term not really in popular use anymore. A Polo neck jumper is a Polo neck Jumper. A Skivvy is the same sort of shape as the jumper but generally made out of a T-shirt like material.
