I have just upgraded my computer to give myself a 120gig HDD. Of course, this necessitated a complete reinstallation of the whole operating system. I cannot now get the .gif piccys to move in the browser windows and I'm buggered if I can remember how to turn them on again.
I loved Gemmi_babe's dancer but now all I get is a statue. This is very limiting. You could call this, "A statue of limitations"
Bob, not long done the same. You need to download and install Flash Player or shockwave from Macromedia. http://www.macromedia.com/software/flashplayer/
This one works but there is others. Should do the trick but if in doubt, ask a Geek:D
I look forward to the day when when you buy a hardrive and it already has a fully operational operating system on it but I could be dreaming.

Ok, I've done that, but it still isn't working. :(
Bob, Did the download complete with a test? and have you re-booted?
If it tested OK you need to ensure DX 9 is installed and working.
To do this go Start/Run and type in "dxdiag" then run the test and sure the version is 9b.
If its not working or old, download the update at;
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
Then if that fails download and instal the following
http://sdc.shockwave.com/shockwave/d...d/download.cgi?
After that call you can try upgrading your video card drivers which wont hurt anyway and then try a real Geek.

Bob, it may have something to do with Internet Explorer settings after the new load. All mine stopped working after installing Win XP SP 2 for some reason. I ended up having to install Java VM but we really need a proper Geek.:D
Grunt will probably be able to critique my advice and suggest something less time consuming:)

On internet explorer go to
Tools - Internet Options - Advanced.
Scroll down and make sure 'Play Animations in Web pages' is ticked.
The program you used to create the annimation originally might be an avenue to explore.
My annimation program requires me to use FILE>Export and not 'save as' when doing the works. Just trying to jog your memory, by the way it gets worse as you get older.

Do you not have an option on your web page software that lets you do something like "maintain your web site"
Perhaps you have got to start from scratch with the gif picture and put onto your web page.
Or am I misunderstanding your original question.

When you went into internet options/tools/advanced and did what David suggested, did you "apply" the changes?
I'm not all that familiar with XP as I run ME but they don't differ that much, XP just looks prettier ;)
Sometimes certain things don't install properly/download fully and need to be re-done several times, like our wonderful VM files. Sometimes they go walk about too. I use to get error messages as I booted up about VM files being lost or in error, but now I scan disk everytime I boot and haven't a problem since.
Maybe someone here can go thru with you what you have checked and unchecked under your advanced tab.
With mine, I have under "Microsoft VM" the only one checked is JIT compiler for virtual machine.
And under "mulitmedia" all are checked except for 'always show radio toolbar' and ' show image download placeholders'
Hope the problem rectifies soon for you.

I consider myself to be fairly expert with computers as I have been using them foir the last 30 years. This is just a stupid little glitch that ,as you say, is probably just a bad install somewhere.
Hi Jow, The problem is on my computer, not with the avatars. If this were not so then none of you would see the moving avatars. The avatars are stored on the UBeaut system for downloading to everybody.
Bob, I just noticed that its not working on my computer but it is on SWMBO's computer. (They are identical machines) I havent put XP SP 2 on the missus machine yet so it'll be some stupid setting in IE I reckon.

Are you having any other problems in your browser cos this may just be a symptom of something else. Can you see animated gifs in other webpages or is it just here. DO you have any other problems in this forum, eg layout problems, buttons, etc.
It sounds like you could have one of two problems:
1. The software that displays the animations is suss - have you installed any graphics packages that may be hijacking the gifs. Let us know if you have - maybe try double-clicking a gif and seeing what program opens. Let us know if it is something unusual and we can see if it is contributing.
2. A setting in explorer is wrong - you've done the obvious one which is the "play animations in web pages", the other thing to try is your security settings as it may be a problem with scripting or activex that has been turned off by high security settings. This forum uses fancy scripting to display the gifs and there may be a problem there. Try dropping your security level and see if that makes a difference. Don't leave your security too low, just do it to find the problem. There is a article in Microsoft KB that describes the opposite of what you want - ie how to stop your browser displaying active content - but you may be able to work backwards.

You've said you are fairly expert on computers after 30 years (did you start on punch cards?) so these should be OK for you. Just be careful to put your security settings back if it doesn't work and don't go visiting lots of other websites while you security settings are low.
