If he was a forward and hasnt scored a point i umpteen years he may not have been "involved" in the game!

Hmmm...a couple of possibilities come to mind. He was either so good that he didn't miss the goals once and so never scored a point or he played on the forward line but not his forward line, the full back.

I think 'Elbow' has got it. Thank goodness the answer was not Matthew Richardson.
