Fence, which side of the posts does the wire go on?

When you're putting up a fence, how do you decide which side of the posts the wire goes on?

I've only ever put up barbed/barbless wire fences and on those it always goes on the inside so when the animals push against it they are pushing against the whole fence and won't just pop the fasteners off the posts and push though the fence.

I'm building a fence and putting horse wire on it and was going to just put it on the inside of the posts like usual but then I started wondering what was the proper side. Is there a proper side?

I'm don't really care that much, I'd like it to look nice from the neighbors side though.

If you want it to look neat from the neighbours side, I would put the wire on their side i.e. on the outside. It just means that your have to cut the grass around the poles more from your side, wheras your neighbour just follow the fenceline

The wire on the left-hand boundary goes on the neighbour's side and the wire on the right-hand boundary goes on yours. Or the other way around if your house/lot number is odd.

Are you serious? How do you know which side is left and which is right? :rolleyes: :U

OK, serious answer. In town it's common with a timber fence to put the palings on your side on one boundary and the neighbour's side on the other. Then the neighbour does the same and so on down the street, so that everyone gets a good side and a bad side, if you want to look at it that way. Same with a steel fence.

Out in the bush, well I suppose it's up to who ever puts the fence up. I have no neighbours, so we just did what looked best for us, and that's with the wire on the other side so that we can't see the staples. Not that I would care if we could, but that's the way the old cocky who did our fencing did them. If a future neighbour wants to complain about it, they can give me half what it cost because I had to pay for the lot!

Can you still send a wire? I thought they were phased out with the invention of SMS?

The only problem I can see with putting it out their side of the posts is that their side of the property is full of obstacles and other misc croup. I'd planned on laying the rolls down and rolling the wire out beside the fence but that won't work on their side of the fence. :(

I really do think it would be best to give them the "nice" face though and I really don't care which I see cause a fence is a fence. I plan to run weedkiller down the fencerow so neither of us should have to worry about trimming, its a royal pain with fence like this and tends to tear up the fence anyhow.


Oy, getting the fence on the other side of the post line will be a bit of a trick, I fear I'm going to have to unroll it on my side of the fence as its the only clear side. :no:
