Tyres

I have not bought tyres in Australia for about 15 years. Can anyone tell me what a reasonable price per tyre would be for steel-belted tubeless radials for a Camry?

Also I am not sure how long I can continue using my current tyres. They still have about 3 mm depth of tread left on them.

Advice would be appreciated.

Put a set of 4 on my better half's Commodore last weekend - Bridgestones, plus a wheel alignment & balance from Bob Jane for $450 or so total. Should be the same for a Camry.

Surprisingly enough, it is not just because of my Scottish ancestry that I haven't bought tyres here for so long. Until five years ago, I was living in the US. I bought a new car in 2000 when I returned to Australia, and since then have only done a low mileage - about 45,000 km. I think the last time I bought tyres here was about 1990 in Darwin, where you get ripped off for everything.

I also just put tyres on the Commodore, 'bout $450.00, or a little more, wheel alignment was extra. Also Bridgestones, kinda depends on brand and type etc.

3mm tread depth is ok but is the minimum you want. Look for the wear indicators in the grooves. When you reach them it's time to change.

Rocker, I call a set 4 tyres.

Rocker.. I put a new set of HANKOOK tyres on my camry (sportivo) just before chistmas.. cost me $165.00 fitted a piece

the car came with michelin's as a standard and I got 75,000kms out of them, I hope the HANKOOKs do as well

What's this 'tyres' business? :confused: I just wrap the Falcon's rims with electrical tape. :D Doesn't seem to affect the handling any and if I turn up the radio, that funny grinding noise only bothers the bloke driving next to me. ;) No tailgating either - don't understand that unless they don't like the sparks. :p The cops don't seem to mind either, and I talk them one of them just about every time I go out. :rolleyes:

I've consistently found Jax to offer better service, less BS, and they'll match anyone else's prices.

(No personal interest in the company).

My process is to visit www.tirerack.com, look at the reviews etc., and choose a tyre.
Then ring around the local tyre shops, ending with Jax.
Book a time, & take the car in.

Again, thanks for further advice. I am inclined, since I don't do a large mileage, to get middle-of-the-range tyres, even if they don't last for 75,000 km. I shall be lucky to get 50,000 out of my Brigestones.

I make a point of avoiding Dunflops and Kuhmo.
Kuhmo's have gone out of round so often and Dunflops were just unpredictable.
I now use Yokohama and get about 50k a set which is not bad considering my beast is a full time 4WD, read additional wear to compensate for superb handling.

Lucky you havent got tyres like my ST170 focus(my avatar) has got, the last price I heard of was $330 ea!
Continentals contisport II 215/40/17's ZR rated(i thinks), I have to have high rating tyres as the ST is capable of 220kmh+! very nice tyre tho
