There is only one thing that is starting to really annoy me about the new format.
If I navigate away from the forum to another website for more than just a few minutes the forum logs me out and I have to resubmit username and password.
With the old format, I could stay logged in for days or weeks at a time and just click on the forum tab and carry on where I left off.
Is there a reason for this, or a setting i haven't found yet?
Doug
Forget about navigating away, I get logged off every half hour with firefox.
Stop for a coffee or eat something and its log in again. Very annoying.
I work in IT and upgrading is done to add funtionality (I can't see any here) or to fix bugs (I never found any), but it needs to an easy upgrade for existing users (don't see that either). And worse of all I can't post a reply with my version of firefox.
Would be nice to find out from whoever wrote this version what the minimum requirements are and what browsers its coded for.
If I look at a thread without logging in I don't see the initial post at all but instead only an ad'. Then I have to scroll way way down to see the first reply. Happens on both my netbook and Ipad.
When I log in it works as it should, but if first timers, and people not registered, have the same experience it must be very off putting for them.
I haven't been reading all the posts in this thread so could someone throw up real quick whether hiding certain forums is yet possible?
And the other one I'm having trouble with is subscriptions. Under settings, if there is a subscribed thread with a new post in it, there is the option to unsubscribe, but if you go to view all subscriptions, there doesn't seem to be the option to modify in there.
Thanks
I use Firefox (15.0.1) on both my notebook and my Android Tablet, I NEVER get logged off. I'll also ask the question, do people tick the Remember Me box when logging in?
I can post replies on both of those platforms, I edit posts on both of those platforms, so I am at a loss to think what can be different about your experience.
As a Mod I also do heaps of things behind the scenes and the forum never falls over or logs me out doing any of these things.
I havent changed anything on my computer. browser privacy settings are the same. The ONLY thing that has changed is the Forum itself.
I usually notice that I have been logged out when I go to browse a different thread and the first post is compressed into a margin about five characters wide down the left hand side, and generally several screens long depending on the size of the post by an advertisement that I cant even see. It does not show up in my browser. This does however make the post impossible to read, and as someone else pointed out, if I was not already a member then chances are i would not join because you cant read anything.
Doug
I also asked this question some time ago and was told that at this stage no! Apparently this function relies on iSpy which is not available in this version. So when we go to new posts we will have to get used to getting all the forums and cherry pick the ones you are interested in.
The Quick Reply button is still mention in the FAQ's but it also appears to have disappeared.
Two forward steps, one backward step.
Doug, I have read back a little bit but have not seen what browser you are using or what hardware?
Just as an addition - I have since closed the "New Forum Posts" and "Tag Cloud" boxes - When I hit the back button now it goes back to the top of the page but the 2 boxes I had closed are open - pause for a couple of seconds and the page blinks and the boxes close, pause and the page repaginates back to where I was down the list.
Re the "problem" of being logged out - not had this one.
Me too!
And I've tried accessing the forum from my Android phone, FireFox and IE, under Windows XP, Windows7, and Ubuntu.
As a bonus, after typing my username and password each time, I then have to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the blue VBulletin layout, and click "Full Site" to actually get to the new layout.
:(
Last night my Android Tablet (Android 4.x) spat the dummy and I had to do a factory reset (and re-install all the apps I had downloaded.
When I had downloaded Firefox I opened Woodwork Forums and yes I got the blue vBulletin screen as well and had to scroll all the way down the page to Login, when I had logged in I then had to scroll all the way down again and select Full Site.
So yes I know what you are talking about and it is the most braindead way of getting on a forum I have ever seen, we must be losing a lot of potential members that are on their mobile devices.
Having said that, once I logged in (having clicked Remember Me) I now have no trouble getting on the Woodwork Forums every time I return and don't get the blue screen but the "proper" skin, and I don't have to login.
I can also get on the forum, and it remembers me on my Android "smart" phone, and Firefox on my notebook (WinXP) also remembers me. Having said that I almost never use the forum on my phone, I am no masochist.
So, I am at a loss to explain why it doesn't remember other people using Firefox on these devices.
I have no experience with IE, refuse to use it, no experience with Chrome as it wants to install the SweetIM cr*p.
Its not a matter of the remember me check box. All this does is make windows remember your username and password and logs you in automatically.
I don't let windows remember ANY of my usernames and passwords.
If you ever get something nasty thay can collect the information and send it to russia or whereever. I always key usernames and passwords.
Now, currently it will write a cookie with information, but cookies have an expiry. On ebay its about a day. So if you continue to look at the page (browser open on the ebay page) you will need to log back in in 1 day.
This site seems to have a cookie expiry of half hour. So if your looking at the page and don't do anything for half hour (coffee, phone call, dinner) you have to log in again.
Use google and search for cookie expiry.
Get them to turn it off or set to 1 day.
I also get his on top of firefox page when not logged in "'); var sidebar_align = 'right'; var content_container_margin = parseInt('270px'); var sidebar_width = parseInt('250px'); "
I also hate IE but can;t post without it. My firefox won't do them.
That's incorrect, your username and password are stored on the server (in a mysql database) which hosts the forum software. Your initial visit, when the check box is selected, is recorded in a cookie which is stored in your browser. When you visit the forums after closing down the browser, the forum software checks to see if you have a cookie stored and initiates a session for you to browse and automatically logs you on based upon the cookie stored in your browser. The only valid reason for you not to be automatically logged on is if you have your browser set not to accept cookies.
I've used, Firefox, Chrome and Safari on my Mac and Firefox, Chrome, Safari and IE on Windows (via bootcamp) and my none of the logins have expired. The login length is actually one year! See the following attached image:

Well arrn't you lucky that it works for you....
But some of the rest of us are having trouble.
And I am not remembering my username and password in a cookie on my machine. A cookie for the session is ok, but it is expireing.
So now explain why so many people are getting logged out after 30 mins.
Anyway, time to kill IE and go back to reading only with firefox.
Yeah, I am lucky but it puzzles and pains me that you are having trouble :(
I would suggest clearing all browsing data in your browser and starting afresh. A long shot, but worth a try. Apart from that, based upon the information I can glean from the cookie data, there should be no reason as to why people are not being automatically logged on.
My cookies ALL get deleted when I close the browser and does history and cache.
I don't want to be auto logged on. I'll log in when I start the page.
but while I'm looking during the evening I don't want to do it every 30 minutes. I just checked all the cookies currently on my machine and they don't have expiry dates on them, So it must the the server code that is doing it. Is it trying to refresh the page and dropping something.? I just know it happenning to me.
And then with firefox i can't reply anyway, can only read the posts.
If your deleting your cookies when you close your browser, then you should click the Save? box and you cookie won't expire every half hour but will be deleted when you close the browser and clicking the Save? box won't auto log you on so just click the Save? box to stop you being logged out
I'm wondering if any IE users that are checking the 'Save' box and have their settings to 'Accept All Cookies' and not to clear them when the browser is closed are experiencing the logoff problem?
Some guys are being logged off immediately, some after 30 min, some not at all.
If it were in the site's general settings it would most likely happen to everyone using the same OS and browser. Since it isn't happening to everyone, doesn't this indicate that it's to do with individual member's settings?
I'm no expert, but that's how it looks to me. We have to start somewhere.
I have NEVER ticked the Remember Me box in the past, nor do I need to do so on other forums. But now I have this problem with ONE forum, and one forum only, regardless of what browser i am using. Like __FLY__ I do not want to let the machine log me in - I log in when I want to log in. Every workday I access the forum from one of several shared computers at work, and have done so for a long time.
I have tried different computers. and different browser on the different computers and the result is the same: under the old forum configuration, I was logged in until I chose to log out; under the new forum configuration I get logged out at the whim of the software.
ONLY one thing has changed, and its not on my end,
Doug
For those having problems staying logged in I have done some tinkering and maybe... MAYBE it has fixed the problem if not you may need to clear your cache. Below is info on how to do this:
Internet Explorer
- 1 Launch Internet Explorer.
- 2 Click the "Tools" menu and select "Internet Options."
- 3 Select the "General" tab and click "Delete" under Browsing History.
- 4 Check the boxes next to "Temporary Internet Files," "Cookies" and "History," and click the "Delete" button.
- 5 Click "OK."
Mozilla Firefox
- Launch Mozilla Firefox.
- Select the "Firefox" menu, choose "Options" and choose "Options" again from the menu that slides out.
- Click the "Privacy" tab and choose "Settings."
- Check all the boxes under the History section and click "OK."
- Choose the "I Close Firefox" option in the Keep Until drop-down menu.
- Click "OK" and Close Firefox.
No guarantee it will work but it is an option.
only started to happen since the new format...i thought they were still having teething problems so didnt bother to ask till now
does not happen in edit mode...as I have just done with this reply...but when I try to make a new reply the blinking curser is there but it doesnt show in the box when I click or whilst typing
ahahah it happens when I clear firefox history and only on the first instance?:?
I will try IE and see if that is any better
this place doent like me and IE....the screen shot below is when I was using IE...hit enter key wont take me to next line while while typing this..cant see curser...i ahve no idea where I am while typing unitl a letter or numeral pops up on the screen
I didn't do any of the things that Neil suggested as my machnie deletes cache and cookies when I close the browser.
BUT I'm guessing they have fixed the log off problem. I've been on with firefox for 2 hrs now without having to log in over and over.
I even fired up IE to make this post.
Thanks.
I'm still seeing posts about pen-turning... any word of this problem being fixed?
I'm not sure if all non-members are seeing the forum like this, but I certainly hope not. Browser is IE8.
Thats the same as how I see it in IE8 and in google chrome, when I am not logged in. the disturbing thing about that is that is how anyone visiting the forum who is not a member sees it for the first time, and It cant be doing a good job of encouraging people to join and participate.
As for seeing posts on pen-turning.
I have no objection to pen turning in itself. What I object to us the unnecessary violence, carnage and butchery associated with pen turning that flows over into the timber sales forum in the marketplace. I am continuously traumatised by photos of perfectly good burls, boards and slabs which would have made wonderful box tops, even box sides, bases for clocks or other things mercilessly cut into pieces so small you could only use them as pen blanks. It should be illegal to vandalize scarce resources in this way when there are plenty of perfectly good small offcuts that could be used for pen turning.
There should be a separate forum similar to "The Orange Room" which requires a password where this wanton vandalism can be confined and only viewed by the insensitive souls who partake in this insidious trade. :(( :(( :((

Having uploaded a few photo's since the upgrade I was wondering if the old size limits (file size and image size) still apply. File size is probably more a concern for Neil as the images have to be stored on his server I imagine.
I'm not sure what the old file types / sizes were, but these are the current ones: -
