Finally, how does the "$100m worth of free publicity" translate into actual revenue in Australia? You can't tell me, nobody knows. $3m is small potatoes, hardly even worth raising an eyebrow over. But it's just one example of a government busily fiddling while Rome burns. Assuming we do reap all these benefits eventually, how much of the money that comes into the country through tourism will go towards the infrastructure that the government should be spending on? I'm sure the Melbourne family who lost their little boy last year as a direct result of under-funding in our local hospital will be thrilled to hear that local businesses and tourism operators will have a bumper year next year.
