I should be there if I survive the next half hour of trying to take deep cuts in steel on the metal lathe. Yesterday I sent about half a kg of steel round bar flying around the workshop and almost needed clean pants.

I hope you survive, wear a helmet.:booboo:
Tonight I was talking about an assembly/infeed/outfeed table that I want to build.
Here's the link. The ULTIMATE Workbench
I have been looking at the microjig Matchfit system for a while and I think the time might be right.
The plan calls for a sit/stand desk mechanism to support the table and I found this electric one that looks like it will do the job with a 100kg lift capability so I bought it. Electric Standing Desk Height Adjustable Sit Stand Up Motorised Frame Only Black | eBay
Should keep me out of trouble for a few hours.
Unfortunately I won’t be hosting tonight’s Round Table Jabber, but even so it can still go ahead.
All welcome,chat among yourself.
Cheers Matt.
I am hoping to be there.
I am having a big resawing day today so my back is likely to be bloody sore by the time the meeting is on. At least the boards are getting smaller each time they go through the bandsaw.
If my back survives the day I should be in for a chat.
Work is in the way for me this evening. It hardly seems right.
:(

Paul
Pagie and I had a meeting of two.
Very pleasant chat. Chainsaws were mentioned in passing.
Excellent to see guys, my apologies again .I’m very glad chainsaws were mentioned[emoji6].

Doug, Simon Winchester,
EXACTLY
Lovely little chat with two of the regulars tonight.
A book I’ve been prattling on about, that myself and Paige were trying to convince Doug to read.
May suit a few hear who enjoy reading about the history of Engineering or more precisely the development of precision.

Cheers Matt.
Thats exactly the one.
:U
Haven't read the book but did hear S Winchester on an episode of ABC Conversations with Richard Fidler (Sep 2019). Can still be heard via the net.
I found it both interesting and amusing, and learned that one of the most important people in the development of modern engineering was called Iron Mad Wilkinson. It's sad that we don't have people with names like that anymore, it has such a mad scientist feel to it.
I wasn't going to be able to log in for the chat, but seeing as how our visitors are now locked down in Brissy, I am left twiddling my thumbs so hope to catch up with faces new and old: That is new and old to the thread and proof of age is not a condition of entry  .
For those of you who are not techno minded and require the link, this is the one I found back on page 6 post #87 (in case my link does not work.

I might make the first 20-30 minutes.
I have a doctors appointment.
Need to get the results of an x-ray and ultrasound on my shoulder.
I had the x-ray and ultrasound on Monday and this is the earliest appointment I could get.
Things are almost back to normal by now so should be no major worries but we might finally find out why it keeps going out.
Your shoulder goes out more than you do.

Matt
All the best for the meeting. I have to work :(
Years ago I bought a pen turning kit, but have never used it. I would have to buy a set of lathe jaws small enough to grip the blanks before I became operational! I am thinking your "professional" may live very close by?

I think I saw a saw there. I have something to convey on saw sharpening tonight: A minor break through for the visually challenged. Tune in and all will be revealed.

This is the link to the Covid thread I mentioned in "The Prattle" tonight.
breaking covid rules - Page 9 (woodworkforums.com)
It started out as "breaking the rules" but has developed, nine pages later, into a general discussion, usually very restrained. The last post, # 131 contains the description of how serious coivid-19 can be and elaborates on the "four stages:" Disturbing to say the least.
I will post some headband magnifier details tomorrow. Running out of time tonight.

Paul
For some time the Optivisor headband magnifier made by Donegan has been the device that all others were judged by. The optics from the glass lenses are excellent, but it is on the expensive side. A quick glance on Ebay shows prices down around the $100 mark.
I saw through Cesdeals a similar item with multiple lenses for just over $40 and that is the headband I showed last night. The four levels of magnification are x1.5, x2.0, x2.5, x3.5.
Head Wearing Magnifier Glasses Loupes Portable Magnifying Headband Eyewear (cesdeals.com)
Another quick glance at Ebay shows what I think is the same item down as low as $22.50 !
I just selected the first that came up and it includes free postage:
Headband Magnifier Head Wearing Jeweler Reading Magnifying Glass Loupe Optivisor | eBay
This is the general search for headband magnifier:
headband magnifier | eBay
There is a practical limitation to how much magnification you can comfortably use to sharpen handsaws. As the magnification increases the focus range decreases and you find yourself on top of the blade with no room to move the saw file comfortably. My take is that x1.5 or x2.0 are the practical lenses, but I do use them in conjunction with my reading glasses too so there is small level of extra magnification.
So although I bought through Cesdeals, which was less than half the price of the Optivisor brand, it appears that through Ebay you can get these similar (knockoffs?) bands for around a quarter of the price and get the additional lenses. Probably worth a try if you are battling to see small teeth or indeed any other intricate work.

See Ya 7.30 tomorrow Matt.
Ok tonights topic will be Is it necessary to measure your work? I mostly just make stuff fit.
Who changed the day?
Just a reminder for those who need it,
7.30 pm tonight Sunday Round Table Jabber.
Cheers Matt.
In the Jabber I was mentioned to Pagie and Simplicity that I had bought some scrap steel from work.
I saw this lying around
Attachment 500333Attachment 500336
and I immediately thought I could see a hydraulic press with the use of a large bottle jack. I calculated the frame weighed 348Kgs (from steel mass books)
I also spotted in the waste skip some pipe
Attachment 500337
This is a smaller sample. As you can see it is just under 5mm wall thickness.
Attachment 500338Attachment 500339
Quite useful as it is seamless and being stainless steel polishes up nicely.
Attachment 500340
It is the internal tube from our sootblowers at work. They are devices that insert into the boiler while rotating and blowing steam at the same time. This rotary action cleans off ash deposits from the boiler tube surfaces and allows better transmission of heat. This tube is from one of our longer blowers and before being cut up was probably close to ten meters long.
I negotiated monetary exchange and brought them home. While the steel scrap bins are collected by the metal merchants for a sum of money, private purchases, such as mine, are donated to the Life Flight organisation.

Paul
