Actually, there's a saw-nut in the hole. I used one of my Cobalt bits and a drop of cutting oil.I was going to try to draw back the temper a bit to make it softer but I thought I would try it "as is" and there was no problem.Earlier I drew back the temper on half of the piece I cut off the corner of the big Disston I am rehandling and found that I could drill through that. Before I got too excited, I realized that Mr Disston may have already tempered that part of the sawplate before drilling the holes for the old handle. I found that I could also drill through the end I had not tempered, so still not sure I achieved anything by heating that part up to 400 degrees C except that I did not damage it in any way by doing so. It's a very short 57 sec video (hardly worth breaking out the beer)and not very clear. Actually I am not sure whether they are punching the plate using the handle with holes already drilled as the pattern or whether the "stems" are drills. Unfortunately the clarity is so poor I can't really see, but I am leaning towards the plate being punched. I think this is the way the holes were made as there is usually as distinct burr on the reverse side of the plate that is conducive with punching as opposed to a slight burr resulting from drilling.
The first few seconds before the punching/drilling operation demonstrate how wheat carving was achieved. Early models (before 1890s?) were carved by hand, but Disston were quite progressive in utilising machines to speed up production.

You are right and the Disston empire was quite secretive. There are still a couple of aspects in the blade process that have not been revealed. Only Houdini had more secrets in fact. The other aspect is that the video is for sale and the inference is that the copy you buy can be HD or SD and is higher quality (where have I seen that sort of marketing before :rolleyes: ). $150 to $170 is a bit steep I would have thought and I think that is large American dollars, not dainty Aussie dollars.
Anyhow, if you care to keep looking there are four other Disston clips. I re-read the information on the clip I posted and I got it entirely wrong. There are two sets of drill clusters, which also incorporate the counter bore for the head (and medallion) of the saw screw. The employee drills one side, flips the handle, moves across to the other cluster and drills the "flip' side. He completely drills two handles in twenty seconds!

I had "one of those days" in the shed yesterday.Normally if I catch myself doing something wrong, I stop and assess if my head is in the right space to stay in the shed. Yesterday, I started out by trying to drill a hole in my saw handle with a drill bit the wrong end around in the drill press.I should have left the shed but there was too much to do so I carried on.Nothing really bad happened but I am not real happy with how the stuff I did turned out. I managed to fix most of the problems I created when I was a little careless with some drilling operations.I finished up making some brass bushings to drill through to fix problems of holes not being concentric. Seriously, there's nothing hard about concentric holes but I was stuffing it up all day.Today, in between a couple of medical appointments, I just have to finish fitting the sawnuts and drill the holes in the sawplate and then I will be ready for Matt's place on Saturday.Hopefully today goes smoother for me than yesterday.EDIT: Why is the forum software removing my paragraphs and turning my work into a wall of text when I post?
The count down is now on 13 hours till I must drag my hot body out of bed,

Well today has been and nearly gone.
Doug and Jools arrived approximately a moment after 10 am
An after a brief tour of the steel manor was straight down into the creative zone unpacked his gear and was ripping right into his D8 reproduction.
Benny arrived a short time lately and after good morning how do you do.
Dumped Mum in the sitting room and was in the creative zone being shown the fine things in life and my patent pending saw handle carving tool(pm if you would like one there only $289 plus postage).
Unfortunately ,Benny was a little under the weather, and only stayed for an hour or two.
But ,I must say there is a sweet little saw on its way ,very impressive.
Doug stayed till after lunch(Thank You Sally for catering)
Were more lies were told and little bit more D8 work was done.
Before departure mid afternoon ,for some rust hunting.
Thank you both guys for coming,
it was a very relaxing but fun time.

Thanks Matt and Sally for hosting the day and for providing a lovely lunch. I didn't break my diet - I blew it to pieces.
After two days of one-on-one sawmaking with Benny in my shed in the lead-up to Matt's day, it was good that Matt took the lead in helping Benny today so that he gets someone else's perspective on things. His saw is coming along well. It is a credit to Benny's attentiveness, respect and keenness to learn that both Matt and I have invited him to come back to our respective sheds to help him get his saw finished.
Paul (Bushmiller) we spared a thought for you having to work and being so far away. We know that your spirit was with us today and thank you for that.
My own thumbhole ripsaw handle is coming along nicely, but no further progress will be made until after I return form my Easter break. My limited amount of useful activity time will be dedicated to organizing our camping gear for the next week.
Matt suggested that we visit the Mill Market (a local Craporium in Ballarat) on the way home where I found a couple of interesting items including a book on traditional woodcraft. Jools found a good quilting shop along the way somewhere.
It was a great day.
