Err, not quite. A "explosive" combustion is called "detonation" or known as "pinking". The controlled burn in an I/C engine is just that - controlled. It is an evenly expanding flame front that eventually (in mS) consumes the available mixture. In a stochiometrically correct system (around 14.3:1 air:fuel, at STP), this would create a symmetrical burn, but most production engines run somewhat richer mixtures because of combustion chamber shape and variable heat transfer issues.
