it's a mix of acclimatization, clothing and what the temperature and wind speed are.
the last few days have felt positively "warm" -- little if any wind and a temperature of 4 or 5 degrees (the temperature hasn't been above freezing since early November and we've assuming the minus sign, so 4 or 5 means -4 to -5)
The max was -18 on New Year's Eve.

The biggest challenge so far is keeping the car warm.
The garage is heated to +18 C so starting the car is not a problem, but by the time we've gone a kilometre or so, the coolant in the radiator is well below freezing and even after 100km on the highway the engine is still too cold for the idle cut-out to work.

I've finished the barn door all bar the painting.....

However, this has given me time to start work on the storage. Ive looked at retail-available shelving but, understandably, that doesn't go as high as 3 metres and seemed very expensive. I looked at second-hand racking and this does go to 3 metres but is even more expensive? So I thought I'd see how reasonably I could make it now that I really can exclude my own labour cost :; ?
I placed the PA door in the shed extension such that I could use it to load long 'stuff' straight into the end of the racking so that determines where the racking should go. The wall height is 3 metres so that the eaves of the extension are higher than the ridge line of the old shed, and that sets the maximum height. There is a window set into that wall and I have to stay clear of that. I have a lot of 'stuff' stored in plastic tub containers and that sets the upright and shelf spacing for a majority of the storage.

As I am already in trouble re spending on the shed, the costs for the storage needs to be gradual ... and low.... and that dictated a modular design which would allow me to make another bay each time I'm in the GOOD BOOKS although that would have meant only 1 bay in the last 5 years :B !
I decided to use structural grade 90 x 35 mm pine available in 3 metre lengths from Bunnings and this is the prototype that I designed and assembled today....

..... the apparent curvature of the structure is due to the crappy mobile phone lens and is not indicative of twisted timber from Bunnings! There will be 4 more bays like this one and the shelves on the prototype are the only 3 shelves that are common to all 5 bays. All of the bays will then have a few additional but different shelves and/or bins. I'm pretty pleased with it as each of these modules uses only 9 x 3 metre lengths of 90 x 35 radiata pine and these are currently LESS THAN $8 PER LENGTH. So, a total cost of $70 for a basic bay :U.

Hi Nick, would you believe l thought of that too but some of my storage tubs are VERY heavy (45 years of aviation and modelling books and magazines) and so l didn't risk it. I remember my Grandfather testing a set of bookshelves by loading it with bricks until he got an 1/8" deflection and then claiming that he had designed it to withstand "exactly that many bricks"! Some of the extra shelves will be a lighter structure though.

two comments if I may ...
personally I'd allow more space between the PA door and the first bay to allow the PA door to be used as a door rather than what seems from the photos to be more an access hatch.

Bracing?
unless those joints are really high quality M&Ts -- which will be difficult with structural grade pine -- your prototype needs diagonal braces across the back and on both uprights

I had the same thoughts as Ian about the PA door and access. Nothing worse than needing an extra inch to manoeuvre things.

Had to look up MANOEUVRE. Too early in the morning and it's a bugger of a word to spell. Guess it's the French origin.

The spell checker here is still putting a wriggly red line under it so who is correct??:?:shrug:

If you are planning on more of these shelving units in a modular style, they may well become more rigid as the are attached to each other (bolted or screwed) and that being the case you might not need bracing.

Can you fix the shelving to the wall? That would definitely give it rigidity.

Re the PA door, l must be having the same thoughts because originally the rack was hard against the door and it really was only an "access hatch". I had presumed that, as with the original shed, the PA doors would be made on site and, to centre the roller shutter, the remaining space would give a door (hatch?) only 600mm wide. However, the new shed was built by a much more professional outfit and the PA door came as a standard width leaving the roller shutter OFF centre :oo: !
With the 2 sheds joined, l still have another PA door, the barn doors and the roller shutter visible in the pic, but the rack against a 'real' door just looks like bad planning and so the rack, which is not fixed yet, has been slowly moving further away from the door.
Re the bracing, there isn't even really LOW quality M&T :B !
12mm ply shelves will resist any horizontal racking, fixing back to the wall and occasional side and rear ply panels will resist lateral racking.
I have been asked about the other types of shelves that will be fitted? One of my great annoyances is offcuts, too "good" to throw away but don't "need" it "yet"? So, one of the spaces will be filled with horizontal lengths of cut-up 100mm PVC pipe from the removed DC setup. Also, the upper part of each bay will be separated by a vertical narrow gap, 700 X 2000 X 70 which l'll use for sheet goods like veneered ply offcuts, Perspex and Repliconics enamel Indian motorbike sign prior to delivery!

I wish I'd thought of that!

Before now I've been in trouble for washing my dirty hands in the bathroom basin. I was completely unaware that basin was only for hands that were already clean.

I now go through the de-contamination room (outside toilet and hand basin) before being allowed in the house :( .

Dexion racking is superb stuff with variable shelf heights. Recommended. However, with Graysonline remember to factor in 12 1/2% buyers premium and GST on top of everything

Sure is!
The tote bins seem to have an oily film on them that makes it very hard to clean them. The other MAGIC use of the dishwasher is to clean my HVLP spray gun after use. As I don't have a safe place to spray, I only use water based finishes and the dishwasher does a lovely job :2tsup:

When Shane first advised us of this auction it was at it's starting price of $9. Just a moment ago it was up to $39 ($48 after BP and GST). Still over four days to run. I would expect at least $150 when the hammer comes down. Still a good buy at that price. Assembled and ready to load up with years of magazines within about 10 minutes :) .

Paul your right that these auctions can get out of hand at times, but I have also seen these sell for under $100 for anywhere up to 4 or 5 sections.

The possible price of that Dexion racking has really opened my eyes. I have been an occasional user of eBay but really have shied away from the other online auction houses such as Grays, although I often do a group buy for wine with a mate pushing the buttons.
My 'benchmark' for racking WAS about $360 for a bay of Dexion VS $199 for a 2 X 2 metre bay of adjustable steel shelving from a mates shop in Bowral VS $80 material only for 'agricultural' shelving?
As I am in a position of not needing to pay for my own time, I probably will be better off to make the agricultural shelving customised to my own needs BUT if I could have purchased (say) 3 bays of Dexion for (say) $500, l would have been better off AND looked a tad more 'professional'?

.... but both of these bays will have at least another shelf when complete. The bottom 2 shelves, which will continue the full 6 metres of the wall, are for long goods and the gap between the bays, and above the bottom 2 shelves, will store some smaller sheet goods.

I reckon it will take another 2 or 3 weeks, including remaining a husband, father, grandfather and mate, to get the shed back into production.
I am happy with how it sits on the block ....

Ive been thinking about that. What l would REALLY like is arty wrought iron gum or grape leaf handles .... but I don't have any. Apparently there are smithing classes in Sydney and, should I ever sign up, that's what I would make. Until then, l'll enter through the old door and open these from the inside.

For those who may face the same choice in the future, here's a few things to consider if you want to compare 'agricultural' shelving such as mine and steel shelving either brand new or second hand such as being auctioned on Grays in Shane's post above.
Flexibility,
Agricultural allows you to fill the available space AND divide it any way you want, steel shelving has stepped heights, lengths and gaps between shelving which may not allow you to fill the available space
Cost
My agricultural shelving below.....

..... (so far!) contains an amazing 30 lengths of 90 X 35 X 3000 structural pine at <$8 per length and $40 worth of bugle head screws for a cost (excluding my labour) of about $280. The ply shelves are expected to add another $75. New steel shelving to fill the whole available volume was going to be about $1000 but, from Bunnings, seemed quite flimsy even for that price? Second hand Dexion however seems to go for amazingly low prices via on-line auctions but NOT via the second hand suppliers. It is flexible in terms of shelf spacing although much less so in height, length and width. As shown n the post above, it is also virtually NEW!
Resale/re-use value
This is a very important consideration IF you may have to move in the near to medium future and pack up and relocate your shed. My assessment of resale value is;
new steel (Bunnings style) say 25% of purchase price
second hand (Dexion style) say 100% of purchase price
Agricultural = NIL!

Under the scenario of do-as-I-say not do-as-I-did :B, second hand Dexion via on-line auction would seem to be the best choice with the only downside being a potential lack of flexibility but much higher re-use and re-sale price potential.

With my shelving, l have tailored it to also suit the plastic bins that currently house my book and magazine collection even though I know that the final outcome for those is the GARBAGE BIN .... but I am hanging on as long as I can! I have AT LEAST 16 of the smaller tubs containing magazines sorted by title and date and I have 10 of the bigger tubs for things like electrical, plumbing and dust collector components.

Bays 5 and 6 (above) will have 1 and 2 more shelves respectively. The bottom 2 shelves are continuous over the whole 6 metre length and are to store long goods which can, if necessary, be loaded from the PA door at the end.
The GRAND PLAN for the shed extension is to have my 'prep' machinery, jointer, thicknesses, drum sander and probably pedestal drill (when set up as a bobbin sander) which are all mounted on castors, parked against the end wall....

...but wheeled into the middle under a boom-mounted dust collector duct and hanging powerpoint for operation. All of these machines will soon be modified to 150mm diameter, top mounted and upward facing DC outlets.
Im still about 2 weeks away from having a working shed ....and the separation anxiety is killing me......

Really excellent use of shelving. I have used both Dexion and agricultural shelving in the past although my agricultural shelving was more so being recycled (the uprights were formerly farrowing slats from a piggery so when cut they smelt as though somebody needed to apologise).

I particularly like the vertical provision for sheet material between the bays.

I've been away for 10 days, mostly visiting a couple of mates who are doing it tough at the moment AND maintenance and repairs at Number 1 daughter's place. While l was away, the shed wasn't really weatherproof nor secure so, in many ways, it was nice to get back last night even though it was in the middle of a doozy of a storm. Having taken out a second mortgage and sold one of the grandchildren to pay for it, the 4mm toughened glass was ordered before l left and arrived yesterday so.....

I have often admired the decoration and personalising of others' 'man caves/garages/sheds/pool rooms etc' and, in particular I like old 'porcelain' signs and how they hark to a bygone age, so I have been on the look out for a few relevant signs to personalise my space. For some reason I am drawn, like many others, to transport memorabilia and particularly rail, motor bike and air subjects.
Therefore, as you can imagine, I was over the moon to see this one in an antique/collectables shop up North....

Thanks for the heads up Fred. As I have posted before, I am a babe in the woods when it comes to eBay etc but I'd better learn fast because I very much doubt that I could buy, cut the steel and silk screen my own for <$60!
