The burl seems to be 4 trunks/burls connected by a crap load of tangled roots. I took my first slice today between two burls and it took 3 sharpens as I hit a heap of dirt pockets (black bits in photo). So I've ordered a TCT chain for my chainsaw and hope I can get it cut up in time but I'm not sure.

The bandsaw has been fitted with a new 1" TCT blade I ordered but I had to make up a new guide system as the one on the bandsaw was not adjustable and only suited a 10mm blade.
Its getting closer. Hope everyones plans are going well. A scorcher here today and tomorrow. 41 and 44°
Fortunately only in 30ies for the weekend at this stage

Hi guys and gals,
Good to hear that plans are progressing and the weather will be kind.
I had hoped to talk to people about my forthcoming education series on the photography forum - starts from the real basics and will cover subjects which would even be of interest to users of the latest smart phones (arrgh!! didn't think I would ever say that).
Anyhow it starts next month and details are here
A message from Bob - PhotoForums
Plenty of room for more starters.
Enjoy the weekend.
Bob
Forgot to mention you will need to register again on the photoforum as it uses a different version of the vBulletin software - still part of the Ubeaut suite of forums though.

Real photography with a phone .... cant wait.
I may need a reminder after the GTG

I'll have to do a gofund me thing and see if I can get a pool for future years.

Lets hope it keeps dropping

It might be difficult to drag ourselves out of the air conditioning at our friends' place where we stay.
Anyway Dave, I plan to arrive sometime after lunch on the Thursday. Jools was going to travel with me but she has a new role at work and is very busy so she canceled her annual leave for Thursday and is heading up on the train and bus after work. I pick her up from the bus in Horsham around 10pm so she will be there Friday morning onwards as far as the GTG goes.
HI Dave,
One caveat:oo:, the same rules apply for users of a mobile phone as for users of DSLR cameras. You are expected to have read your user manual and be able to set all parameters such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO; change from auto to manual mode, work in RAW format and upload jpeg image to forum.
The course is aimed at making a photograph, not taking a snapshot. It is planned to run for 10 months with 1 new tutorial each month.
Look forward to having you on board. You might also try using the D200:D
Bob
Oh yes forgot about the D200. Might have to wrestle Raechell for that.
🤣

Or even get her involved with the course as well:U
Finished cutting the burl up with the chainsaw, but sorry guys may have to take some of the bigger chunks back to QLD for casting, to at least try and get most if the $650 I have invested in it. Just too many cracks and crevasses for solid pieces as is.

Some nice Birdseye too

Is this some sort of tease or blackmail thing going on here.
Like if you guys don't buy this off me it's definitely going to turn into pen blanks[emoji849][emoji12][emoji12][emoji12]
Really do you think we're that easily lead on,
Well ok I have a couple of pen blanks if possible please[emoji849].
Cheers Matt
42 degrees! I hope that the humidity in Dooen is nowhere near that of Darwin.
Hope the hot weather hasn't wrecked your lovely lawn Dave.
I will pack the car tomorrow ready for the long drive, all systems are go!
Alan...
Pity about your nice lawn succumbing to the high temperatures over the last few weeks, and the winds that blew all the grass away. I hate wind, certainly wouldn't make a good sailor!. One advantage is that the kids don't have grass stains on their clothes, the dust washes out much easier.
Anyway, getting close now, should be a great weekend, even if there is no grass. (Lawn, that is)

In response to your comment Dave and questions from others about using a smart phone, I have posted a followup clarification / qualification
on the Photo Forum:
"Can I use a smart phone?
Over the past few days I have received several messages or emails asking "Can I do the course using my smart phone"? The answer is "Yes, but" and it is quite a big but.
The course assumes you will be using a DSLR and discusses the features and functions of a typical DSLR. Some of these features are not available in a smart phone or only available in a limited manner. The major features of a DSLR required for any form of photography are the ability to set / change the lens aperture, lens focal lenght (zoom or interchangeable lenses), shutter speed, ISO and white balance. I am not an expert (not even a novice) in the use of the smart phone camera, so my comments are based on the opinion of others such as this article https://iphonephotographyschool.com/...mera-controls/ which refers to the iPhone 7.
In summary, the iPhone has no variable lens aperture - only a fixed aperture. Shutter speed cannot be adjusted in the native app. Lens focal lenght is fixed and there is no optical zoom function, although some models may have 2 lenses - a fixed lenght 'normal' lens and a fixed lenght 'telephoto' lens. ISO adjustment is available with an add-on third party app. Similarly white balance can only be adjusted with an add-on third party app.
Third party apps such as Camera+ offer a software solution to some of these deficiencies, but they are digital solutions only and in general will not produce the same quality as an optical solution. However, you may be quite happy with the result.
So the longer answer is: yes you can do the course with your smart phone camera - the concepts and theory will not change. Your 'camera' may lack some of the ability of a DSLR camera, but you may be able to work around these short comings with a third party app. Equally not all of the consumer level DSLR have all of these features either. Also you must be aware that I do not know how to use your smart phone camera and will not be able to help you with any technical questions.
It is possible to use your smart phone and you are certainly welcome to register on the forum and to participate in the course."
Bob
PS Probably better to wrestle the D200 from Raechell or at least share it:D
Hi David,
sorry i won’t be able to make it this time. Grand daughter’s wedding an other famimly commitments make it difficult to gat away.
Hopefully next year.
cheers
Andy
How are all the preparations coming along guys.

I have prepared a few mallets in kit form for the kids to fit together and finish. I still have to drill out the mortises to make it easier to fit the handles and maybe a bit of shaping with the bandsaw so it is not too difficult.

I will try attaching the picture instead of embedding it.
Dave the picture is visible in the post you quoted of mine saying there was no picture :?
