The locals sleep on the streets. :D

There are a lot of little country towns in the area around PD. Real people actually live in them. I find those types of towns a lot more interesting than PD type places. But maybe that's just me. :D
I could be biased though, as I was born in Cairns descended from a couple of families that had been there since the 1800's. If you're going to go fishing, do it on the reef if you can. The fishing's better and the things you'll catch taste a whole lot better than most things you'll catch in an estuary....
Beautiful place - went there as a backpacker about 7 years ago, although someone stole all my clothes out of the washing machine...
Hope you aren't referring to Julaten. :oo:
We think they all descended from Tasmanians. :p
Narh.... only joking... it is just that up here Julaten is to us what Tassie is to Aus. :D (Local joke... for the seppos, think West Vaginia.)
Yeap, s'long as it isn't blowing a sou'easter, it is not very relaxing laying berly trails around the reef.
When I have been to Cairns or Port Douglas I leave "the good lady" to do those things and I go scuba diving - it really is the experience of a lifetime. You could do a one day resort dive with Quicksilver even with no diving experience, and I think that you won't regret it.:)
never been there but saw a pic of the place with mountains palm trees and tropical waters...
...TAKE ME WITH !
DON'T LEAVE ME HERE TO ROT IN THE POLUTION AND TRAFFIC...:hellno:
Port Douglas is a great place except I'd stay right away from it between the 20th and 25th.
When I lived up in Cairns (approx 7 years - 1997-2004) the best part of going to PD was the drive up. Really nice scenery on a beautiful clear day if you are thinking of hiring a car. Look out for the Palm trees that apparently that DH Christopher Skase planted on the long drive into PD when he was develping up there (can't think of the name of the road but it is the main drag into PD from the CC HWY) apparently they cost $1,000 each, maybe a furfy, maybe Cliff can shed more light on this.
Yeap, Skasey put them & a few other things into PD... some of the locals there reckon he made PD what it is today.
I don't know what they cost but the rumour is that he (or the person given the project) couldn't find big mature palms so they bought an oil palm plantation & relocated them.
I reckon it is more likely to have cost about a $1000 each to move them.
well he sucked the fun out the place then IMHO, there really isn't that much there that appealed to me. By the way did they ever build the McDonalds up there? I remember the locals all went ballistic over the concept. Gumby's gotta eat somewhere when the missus is shopping.
I used to go there 5 times a year.for about 8 years.
Sorry give me Stanley in tassy.
