I agree with what you are saying. However, it is only so much we can talk about in woodwork. After 2.5 years since I become a member, although I cannot say we have talked about everything in woodwork but we have certainly talked about a lot of stuff and sometimes over and over again.

I am a very keen woodworker and I love to muck around too. This forum was crowned #1 in its kind last week. It shows that this forum is popular. If you take all the non-woodwork stuff away, the result may be different.

Personally I don’t like guys who come here and talk about anything else but woodwork. I believe most of us here are keen woodworkers. We do enjoy a few conversations. And sometimes it is the company of a few woodwork mates that gets us through a hard day in the office.

Tripper.......How's your eyesight......I never mentioned a fear of asking a silly question. There are no silly questions. There are some silly answers though.

I did mention a fear (probably the wrong word) of getting the thread hijacked before getting an answer.

Sometimes smart-arseing (for me) is a way of contributing when you don't know it all about woodwork. I spend a lot of time lurking and just soaking up knowledge- gotta get those posts up, somehow...:rolleyes: I mean, at least I feel I'm contributing even if my foot's in my mouth.

I get the point, but I can't help but feel that there's a little bit of getting over it to be done. I could be wrong. But I don't think so.

My wife's got good eyes though. She says she can see nits laying eggs on my kids hair strands....she says they crawl to the very top, and very slowly wiggle there butts and move down the hair popping eggs as they go....how about that !.... Shes got Chuck Yeagor eyes ! ... I'm flat out sighting a nit, let alone one of their eggs.....how one can see a bloody thing, through all those tea tree oil fumes, never ceases to amaze me anyway. Macca, I never said you mentioned a fear of asking a silly question. I would have thought the only real fear of hijacking is when one feels they are asking something they fear is a silly question.

I mean, what do you think.....would a guy like 'arold, be more likely to &&&&& stirr a thread named....say

'Whats a nail for ?'

or

'where can I get a triple biapases coupling for my centurion Mark 5 lathe'

Do you think hijackings got so bad that a member would fear posting even something that isn't silly ? Cause if thats the case, I reakon this forum's definetly on its way up &&&& creek.....

if someones that timid, sounds more like ,IMO, he probably needs a good stir so he can toughen up a bit. :eek:

Off the forum the same problem must still exist, when face to face with someone. In fact I'd say over the net, with all the anonononomity (I can't bloody be bothered spelling that right) its a lot easier asking silly questions.

Ok, i see this as a "serious " thread cos it can have seriuous impact on the future of the forum and what direction it takes. from that perspective, im glad teh moderators are taking a serious interest. what do we want the forum to be??? we winge when theres nobody asking questions for us to answer , yet when they ask a question we say " why didnt you do a search, we have covered that last year". .Dont forget that technology is always changing and what was the best wayto fit the manglaworzel into the whatchamacalllit last year may be totally outmoded by now. searches are great but realtime answers are often better.

I joined in May last year, and i brought with me a hell of a lot of amateur knowledge (i built a whole houseful of furniture with a b&d workmate, a circular saw, a sander and a handful of chisels). now that I could afford more gear (triton and woodrat etc) i can do a lot more.

BUT, that basic knowledge, applied at that level and also converted to the new level i had reached, allowed me to help a lot of people in this forum, in return for the help i had received from other members, I have been able to help a lot of others, and I am proud of that!

Well, at the moment, I dont feel so proud of the contributions put in by a few other members. they arent really contributo0ng anything positive that is useable at teh moment or anytime in the future.

jiokes are fine, in the joke forum, witty retorts are fine in any forum. swomeone leaves themself open for a witty comeback go for it, but dont lose sight of what we are here for - taking the p1s$ out of each other (or was that woodwork? damn my short attention span)

The new posts search is in effect a small search engine, try having a look in woodturning, finishing,General , home renovation, triton forum, box making, wooden boat forum, festool forum, tools & machinery, contacts, woodcarving, metalwork & council of woodwork clubs and tell us what the ratio of " little, or nothing to do with woodworking." compared to what you consider to do with woodworking posts
If you don't like the banter sarcasam jokes then go through the posts that intrest you instead of using the easy way search engine
As to hijacking threads the path followed is a direct result of the replys posted, does everyone have to start a new thread for each question
ie.. A thread on scms may result in a question as to the best way to cut tennons, whats the problem if you want it back on line post a reply and say so , or ask the question again
Silly questions " the old adage runs true there are no silly questions " how many people just lurk and get the answers to questions that you or I may think are general knowledge and how many just don't ask incase they are thought dumb not to know the answers
Smart-&&&& answers , there are a lot of Aussie members "well as other nationalties who hold there own" whose answers may not be to your liking
or you can make no sense of , then ignore them , cause you will proberly never understand, There are some on this forum whose sense of humor is diffrent/ beyond yours if so ignore their posts ( note Ignore List is supplied by the forum)

Finally this is a public forum and once regestered you are a member , to view or post as you wish , if you overstep the guidelines then the axe will fall , deleted or banned, I did not read in the rules as to the number of woodie or non woodie stuff you could post , the forum made No 1 why change the format, Some times its slow so people who like logging in to the forum put in frivilous posts, these seem to get a lot of replys why
.........cause theres nothing else to talk about..... cause the forum is far better than TV

I'm a totally mad, keen, obsessed and passionate woodworker and yes, there have been many days where I needed this forum to get through the rotten day at the office I was having.

Spot on. I enjoy a good laugh but the board is shifting from clever wit to silly remarks and far too much flaming. New members have to go through a kind of school yard initiation before they are accepted. For some of these the humor is lost and they don't come back and that is our loss.
We have lost a couple of long term highly respected (for their woodworking advise) members recently and some others have taken a much lower profile.:( If this is the way the majority want the board to go then that is fine and like I said I enjoy a good laugh but for me I would like to see a shift back to woodworking topics.

Perhaps you missed my point, I enjoy humour. It lightens an otherwise drab day. It restores the spirit. It refreshes the soul. It mollifies the mundane.

Silliness should not be confused with humour. Humour is mature, articulate, often subtle, but always clever. So my comments were not directed toward the iconoclastic Aussie humour as much as plain silly immaturity that some would attempt to pass off as humour. If you can't be funny, why substitute childish dribble in its place?

I don't want a dull "American-type" forum. But I do want one with woodworking as the primary focus. And I certainly don't want to have to wade through mindless dribble to find the nuggets of woodworking gems that have so long been the hallmark of these forums.

Maybe the advice I was given to put the perpetrators of this witless mirth on my ignore list is worth consideration.;)

Interesting to note that the "jokes" forum states that it is for funny stories about woodwoking. When was the last time that one or those appeared? Either there aren't any or us woodies are serious types when it comes to our hobby and don't know any
