But I do think smile icons have their place. there are lots of people I've upset by assuming they'd understand my richardheadedness (sorry Daddles)
Struth Kenmill got banned for something which caused me to spray red wine all over the keyboard. He obviously thought he was funny and so did I, but others thought he was a pratt. Expecting others to have a similar grasp on this language as oneself is probably at best naive and at worst condescending.
But there should be a limit on their usage as Sir Darren noted a few weeks ago.

And what other language has so many words to describe the same things or some many words spelt the same but with totally different meanings:rolleyes:
72 different interpretations of the same word I believe, as any linguist will undoubtably inform you English is one of the hardest to decipher.

Hope I haven't offended anyone, I was just putting a personal view as to why I don't use the grahics

I hope Oz Winner enjoyed our exchange, as I did.

The reason I use smileys (or emoticons to give them their correct name ;) )
is because you can't see my face.

As Al has illustrated, a sentence can mean more than one thing in converstaion, which is essentially what we are having here, depending on facial expression and inflection.

Sure, if you are writing prose then there should be no ned for emoticons, but I ain't read any prose here yet. :rolleyes:

Jim, in the wholehearted interest of starting a 2 off topiced & crossed hijack, I'm not retiring, just taking up a new position in Lismore, so the family & i are heading back to Casino, which in our absence has become the nations R&R centre for travelling around in motorhome type baby boomers, and real estate values have quadrupled in 8 years:(

This is a rare occasion - I am in total agreement with Al :) Smilies are a vital part of a post, if you are saying something that might be taken amiss by the reader, who has no idea whether your intention is to make a joke, or to be bitingly sarcastic; whether your intention is to tease with something that is not intended to be taken seriously, or to put someone down. However great your mastery of English, it is impossible to be totally unambiguous with the written word.

Damn it; I am just repeating what others have said more concisely already. But you get like that when you are on the verge of senility;)

Many of the regulars on the Bulletin Board know each other sufficiently to understand when someone is being serious or sarcastic.

There are times however when one of us is feeling a little down and our comments may sound sarcastic or funny but perhaps we are being serious at the time.

So how can we tell? Knowing the person is one clue, another is perhaps knowing what's happening in their private life. The smilies provide additional information which I think greatly helps to not inadvertantly offend or upset one of our BB mates.

Most of us are horrified when we accidently upset someone else on a personal level. Having a different opinion or a different view is something else entirely - if people can't accept different views then they should grow up.

I deeply regret some things I have said on this Bulletin Board :o however at the time I was unaware of how my comments might have deeply upset someone else - ie I didn't intentionally upset that/those people.

So use the smilies to give the likes of me further clues so I don't accidently upset you - in that way neither of us will be hurt.

The English language - seems like a hotch potch of ambigious words taken from lots of other languages to me but it is the only language I know.:(

I like to think I can get the message across without them. They help to convey a mood, so I'd probably use them more when I'm taking the p!ss than in a serious reply. My favourite one is ;) because I'm a sarcastic bastard.

Other times, I like to be ambiguous - I find it entertaining. English is good for that.
