See ya then
Those coming to the gtg - you need only bring your own drinks.
I ask you respond to my message with numbers so we can cater. If we get a late couple extras that's fine too.
Thanks and see you soon.
Ivan - a shame you had to pull out. Thanks for sending along prizes though - you shouldn't have - but thanks.
Looks like the weather is keeping the same. I might put up a tarp against the shed to do the chainsaw mill and woodwhizz just outside. Should work fine. Maybe just a couple of passing showers - will know better on the day - whatever.
I do ask people coming please don't park on neighbours front lawns - yes I know the only one who would have done that is Ivan and he isn't coming now :p. I will park on my front lawn though  - yes my lawn is crap.
SWMBO is doing her best to get ready - I should do the same and try and tidy up the shed - thing is I need it to stop raining and I need a week - can't see either of these a reality. I do have a tidy slab just outside the shed :D
So who is offering to do the Festool Domino demo?? Midge, Rocker, Major ??? Is anyone interested in seeing a demo of the Domino??
Silence on the demo!
Rocker's pretty good at it! :D
Major'd be good too.
Me.... I've never read the instructions, I just go by feel.
P
:D:D:D
Hey TeeJay,
No Wuckers.
I am already regretting not going.
Just make sure "You Know Who" brings 'the prizes' along:D
I gave "You Know Who" some other pieces and some worse Rubbish I had, it was getting in the way in the Shed.
"You Know Who" was most gratefull [Is that the correct word?] telling me that it is good.
I'm thinking it is WAY better than I appreciate:oo:
Teejay,
If you value your Domino, I would get Midge or Major to demonstrate it. The last time I used mine when Midge was present, I tripped over the cord and the Domino fell off the bench onto the concrete. Remarkably, it stll worked perfectly. But I am a klutz if I have any distractions.
Sorry to hear that Ivan won't be there; he always looks impressive in joint-testing photos:D
Rocker
I do not have the ability to demonstrate anything as far as wood is concerned. However, I am quite happy to lead the cheering when the experts arrive.
Thanks Rocker - Midge has kindly volunteered :)
Yes Ivan whilst perched upon an elevated beam awaiting sudden collapse of the support does give that wonderful look of pre-empting pain upon impact from a short sharp drop that has yet to eventuate.
Unfortunately Mic-D has family visiting so won't be here either. But on a brighter note we may have another visitor or more to come along. :)
Really looking forward to seeing all you the reprobates tomorrow!!! :2tsup: :U :U
TEEJAY is there anything you want us to bring? (besides the door prizes that is!)
I won't be able to make it tomorrow. Have fun without me.
I wont be able to be there tomorrow but hope you all have a great time and the rain holds off for you. Hope someone will post some pics. Have a great day.:Party:
The only thing I want people to bring is their own drinks - we will take care of the rest.
If it is a nice day like today you can also bring your swimmers.
See you all tomorrow.
PS Neil I think you (and Star) will want a dip after milling some larger burls :D
Would love to but can't. I need to pick up the newspaper in the morning.
I would firstly like to say thankyou to all those that came to our place today for the gtg - SWMBO and I really enjoyed the event. :)
I hope you all made it safely to your home or next event - the weather tried it's best at times to make us feel it's presence - hot and steamy to start with then rain then wind and heavy rain hmmmm.
We had a great time regardless. Unfortunately we didn't get to do the domino or chainsaw mill demos as we were just busy eating, talking, dodging the weather and of course getting into the destructive tests of Rockers chair joints. These were really popular with everyone wondering the weight they would take. I think Rocker has some indicative values and we can convert them to effective load capaicities for the chair with different joints and timbers soon.
Pic 1 and 2 Big Splinter (Tom) is just heavy enough to break first joint
Pic 3 and 4 Feather weight Tom is replaced by a better load Sai Densai (Neil) Teejay as Bazza steady the plank and joint 2 is destroyed
Pic 5 Tom and Neil steady the plank as Soundman and creator Rocker stand eack end of the loading plank whilst Bazza and Teejay waltz in the middle of the plank - serious load applied here and it held for some time. When it did let go I was kinda lucky the real "Big Splinter LHS of Pic 6" didn't spike the back of my leg. Impressive load capacity there Rocker
Pic 7 Lucky door prizes are a plenty and Lucky Ruffly got first out of hat and pounced onto magazine collection given by Rocker.
Pic 8 Major winner was Major Mark who grabbed cd donated by Midge
Pic 9 Wattlewemake had a good pick-up of marking guage from Major - beautiful piece too.
Pic 10 Joe jumped onto one of Wendy's beaut books
Thanks for the day Teejay & SWMBO, had a ball and the food was great, as usual ate more than I should have (another new years resolution out the window :-). Also good to catch up with SilentC and the other locals (some even in forum hats and shirts) :2tsup:
The rain may have cut short some demos, but that's a good excuse to have another BBQ. Gold Coast's turn next time, at my place mid to late Feb, I'll post some details under another thread.
Thanks again.
Teejay,
Many thanks to you and Mrs Teejay for putting on an excellent gtg; I would also like to thank those who risked their limbs testing my mitre joints. I think the tests were successful in giving a clear indication that a well-built cantilevered chair frame has a generous margin of safety in normal use, since it took about 365 kg to break the strongest frame.
Rocker
Teejay,
We've just got in the door, thanks for a great day! Thanks also to all those that turned up and let me talk to them!
That bloke from Southern NSW doesn't know too much about bringing decent weather with him though does he?
Cheers,
P
:D
You know Pete the funny thing was when the weather was at it's worst he just stood out under the awning in the mist and said "This weather is really pretty good" makes you wonder what pretty bad is :p
Rocker thankyou so much for the cd for the rocker built using domino - in time once I get a few projects about the house and a couple inside complete I will put this info to good use for a his and hers Rocker - much appreciated.
Your welcome Neil - if you get your mill before next gtg all well and good - if not just give me a buzz - that is if you are keen to slab those two burls you brought. :2tsup:
A few more pics of the lucky door prize recipients are-
Pic 1 Big Splinter (Tom) is the proud winner of a Ruffly "Black Book"
Pic 2 Bazza showing the Dai Sensai marker he has chosen.
Pic 3 Neil is now on the list to immortalise a Rocker rocker with the instructions now in hand.
Pic 4 Mr Simomatra is a rocker candidate too now as SWMBO looks with agreement as she should get a rocker too :D
Pic 5 Silent C quietly strides back with spike in hand
Pic 6 Major grabs a laminated Soundman handcaster and then says he will catch a fish this big - Wendy is suitably impressed.
Pic 7 Joe the magazine man knows a good read when he sees one.
Thanks guys for bringing the door prizes - I would like to personally thank Mr and Mrs Simo for the pen and matching perfume dispensor I chose and also Neil's mate Star for the Bunnings Vouchure I will put it to good use :2tsup:
Many Thanks for the brilliant day, TeeJay and Family.!! :2tsup:
HWMNBO and I had a fantastic time, wonderful to catch up with old friends and meet new friends/forum members. You make the best salads and Tiramisu, TeeJay :)
Well, we have have had two lots of extreme weather at the last two Qld GTG's, I reckon we must be due for great weather for the next Qld GTG :D
Dear Rocker, Thank you for the Woodworking Magazines. I will treasure them.
We went through the tail ends and sides of a few storms on the way back, but the best two sights were not being able to see from one side of Somerset Dam to the other due to the amount of rain falling directing into the Dam and the other sight were all the flooded creeks and low-lying areas after Somerset, before Esk and all that water should end up in Wivenhoe Dam!
Thanks again TeeJay!!
Cheers
Wendy
A pleasure Wendy.
I must confess I had some help with the cakes but Ella didn't with her salads.
:D
Many thanks Teejay and family for a great day. The food was fabulous to say the least
It was great to catch up with old friends and make some more.
Many thanks Rocker for the door prize I know have some rockers on the project list and as big as I am I won't be able to break them
Thanks again
Thanks to TJ and Ella for a great afternoon. Was nice to catch up with old acquaintances and meet new ones. Thanks to Simonatra for the beautiful pen and whoever made the pig sticker!
Was all over too quick and didn't really get a chance to have a decent chat to everyone but it was a most enjoyable day.
We're off to Dream World now before the rain comes back!!
Cheers all.
Enjoy the day I hope the weather holds off for you
Safe trip home
Hi TJ and All,
Yet another Eastern states big, fun gathering. Well done all.
Thanks for the photos too.
When you write 365 kg it does not look all that much but when you see the photo of a beach cricket team standing on those little Z frames it gets a WHOLE lot more impressive. Outstanding Major.:)
Cheers
Pops
Thanks to Teejay and family.
A really great day!!!:D:D:D
thanks to Wendy and Rocker for my prizes.
Neil, I look forward to the next one.
Great to see you all again (the first time for some)
Cheers
Tom
A big vote of thanks to TEEJAY, Ella and all who made me feel welcome at the get together. Had a very enjoyable time and met some interesting characters.
Could it be a first - the host out doing the shopping for goodies while his guests/friends are arriving and taking over his house? It's a good feeling when others are as disorganized as yourself. Many noticed the engineering prowess of TJ with his patio roof. I don't think it will really needs all those floor boards attached to the underside to hold it down - best you let me take them off your hands!!!
Love the scientific way you do destructive testing on your chair joints Rocker - beats those high tech engineering methods hands down. There is a chance you could add a few kgs to the max loads - we are after all just past the festive season and maybe a bit heavier that our last weigh-in!!!
Sound Man Joe. It was a good try at getting Neil's burls into the mix for door prizes. Too bad he took them out again.
I'm convinced dai sensei Neil must have heaps of female friends judging by his desire for selecting two of Wendy's note books from the door prizes. Nice try at putting us off by suggesting you need one in every room to jot down all your creative ideas!!
Simonatra Sam and his dear wife could set up as child minders after seeing the way they entertained TJ's young one. Who had most fun playing 'smash up derby' with the matchbox cars Sam?
Thanks to all the door prize donors - way to go - more prizes than people!!
It was a great day and TJ a special thanks to you for sharing your home with us all and organizing it.
Thanks for the offer Teejay. It will be interesting to see if I can have mine up and running by our next BBQ.
Thanks Rocker, always wanted to make one.
I was going to offer some off-cuts, but sorry, not all of them :U
I wish I had heaps of female friends, but I'm afraid I am just addicted to Wendy's notebooks - Thanks for another one Wendy :2tsup:
A huge thank you to Mr. & Mrs TEEJAY for a fantastic day! :2tsup: :2tsup:
Great to catch up with the usual suspects & meet some new ones. The only complaint was TEEJAY didn't organize the outdoor air conditioning. :p
Anyway here are some photos, I haven't had a chance to do a description of each but you get the idea.
Photos continued............
Photos continued......
AHH a good time was had by all.
certainly no one went hungry:D
seems the monster multi pass lucky door thing is here to stay.
come to think about it I think neil's last gathering was the the last time I remember not breaking one of rockers joints..... so from this time forward I think we have to test some sort of joinery to distruction.
pitty we didnt get to start up a chain saw AGH AGH AGH AGH
I think TJ wanted to get back at a neibour for a 2am karioky session.. but to no avail.
a good day all round thanks TJ & EJ
cheers
SWMBO and I had a great day irrespective of the weather and it's attempts; and the day was really made good from the great atmosphere brought by those that attended both forumites and their partners.
The time seemed to fly by when we were all together as is the way when you are having a good time.
Thankyou to all that attended and a shame a couple couldn't make it - we had a ball.
The pics you took Major help fill in the gaps from what I posted - thanks.
The neighbours here are fine with the occassional noise as we all take turns in doing this - I haven't made as much as I would like but this will change once some more woodworking projects come on line :)
