When I lived up in Cairns (approx 7 years - 1997-2004) the best part of going to PD was the drive up. Really nice scenery on a beautiful clear day if you are thinking of hiring a car. Look out for the Palm trees that apparently that DH Christopher Skase planted on the long drive into PD when he was develping up there (can't think of the name of the road but it is the main drag into PD from the CC HWY) apparently they cost $1,000 each, maybe a furfy, maybe Cliff can shed more light on this.

Actually Cliff, my Dad was born in Julaten. He lived on a cattle station way up north for a while (this was owned at different stages by Dad's Dad's family and by Dad's Mum's family before there was that connection), lived in Herberton and Mareeba, then Cairns. Mum born in Chillagoe and grew up in Cairns. Lots of history for me up there.Quote:

Well, I got some brochures in the mail today so a BIG thanks to Cliff for sending them down. It's muchly appreciated. :)
He also sent some a sample of some kind of woven grass so, thinking I might as well get into the swing of things and get into Nth Qld mode, ready for the trip on Sunday, I duly rolled the grass up, lit the end and sat on the back deck looking at the hills. Bloody hell, the thing lit up a bit fast and I burnt my nose. :((

You were supposed to sniff them, not smoke them. :D
PS. If you search through the stuff carefully there is a Wren Timbers flyer stuck in there somewhere. :wink:

Back in the early 1970's, there were lots of sand dunes and not many people at Port Douglas; so it was an ideal place to take your girl friend or newly-wed wife for open-air fun and games. Unfortunately, Tony Scase changed all that, but I am sure you will still have a fun time there.

At 4 pm EST Thursday, Tropical Cyclone Pierre [Category 1] with central pressure 994 hPa was located over the Solomon Sea near latitude 10.6 south, longitude 156.3 east, which is 1400 kilometres east of Lockhart River. The cyclone is moving west at about 6 kilometres per hour and should maintain a similar track and gradually intensify over the next 24 hours.
Cyclone Pierre is not expected to influence Queensland's weather in the next few days.

Yep, and it's not supposed to rain much, if at all, in winter but it did most of last year and it hasn't really dried out yet this year either. I blame day light saving and the faded curtains myself (there, that should keep you southerners happy for a bit :p )Quote:
