Gumbles old son, well done!
I did the same starting about five years ago, and got a job! Sold the last of our businesses about 18 months ago, but it's just bloody marvellous. (After you get over the shock and emotion and all that stuff).
My missus couldn't believe it, I was offered a consulting job so I'd get on the train and go to town and come home with money. We wondered how long that lark had been going on.
I still get itchy feet occasionally, but really, working for someone else is a splendid way of filling in a few terribly enjoyable years! (and no bad debts!)
Congratulations anyway!
Cheers,
P
:D :D
Gee Gumby - must be very strange for you! Can recall when I left my very secure job with the health department about 12 years ago after working for them in one capacity or another all my working life. Felt totally empty and scared stupid and wondering how the hell I was going to raise a dollar. After 3 months of doing SFA except loafing around, started doing for others what I had always done for myself - paving, painting, building gardens, etc. Never looked back, never had a day when there wasn;t work to go to, always had the choice of will I or won;t I work today.
I really hope that the next stage in your life is exciting and fulfilling and maybe completely different to the last one. And that you enjoy it all, once the shock has gone and you have a few ideas about which direction you are going. I bet you already have a 'feel' for what comes next, just let it surface and follow it.
Good luck!
Jeff (no apologies for the deep and meaningfuls either, I reckon this is a pretty important event in a bloke's life!)
Gumby,
you made the break and good on you. I did the same some years ago and am now doing something I never thought I would be doing. My life in the corporate world taught me something besides watching a bunch of crawling backstabbing butt kissers. I am now working as a consultant building factories all over the world. I haven't been in my shed for seven months and don't mind too much because the current challenges are great, they keep me alive. Just remember as one door close another opens. As long as you are optimistic and have confidence in yourself, all things are possible. I have done the "smelling the roses" bit and after a few months they stink. Re-aim your abilities and dreams and have a go, you won't regret it.
Gumby
Happy 1st day for the rest of your life:) :)
remember........it's better to have tried and failed, than to have failed to have tried
all the best
All the very best for the future Gumby. Just promise you'll do want YOU want to do rather than just what everyone would EXPECT you to do.
It's your life mate, you only get the one. :) :)
Sorry I didn't get back last night :D
She was asleep so I started reading a book and nodded off myself.
Thanks for the encouraging comments people. I'm going to do a some work around the home for the next few weeks and then we are going to NZ for a nice holiday for 20 days.
After that, well, who knows. :)
Is this a good example of "the best laid plans of mouse and man. .."? (pun on"Laid").
Little wonder that she fell asleep with the WWF choir singing hits from the 60s in the background!
I walked out on my job of 20 years about four years ago - At the time it was almost as bad a feeling as when my Dad died. Now I realise that it was the best thing that could have happened.
All the best for your future. Have a great holiday and don't start working until you're ready to (or need to - whichever comes first!)
Geez Gumby you beat me by a couple of months.
Enjoy it mate.
She'll be right Gumby, half your luck mate...;)
HH.

IT has had a big downsize over the past 18 months and all those little techs who used to work in the corporate sector are now in the business on the ground.
