I really like the way your shed integrates with the trees.
When I had our shed built the builderr required nothing within 1m of the shed but there were two small trees less than that away from the shed and it cost me carton for the subs to work around the trees and it has been well worth it.
Never fear Fletty, the new digs way outdo the old one. I'll take some pics and put up a post soon with the workshop and
some of the things I have been doing along the way. :)
Thanks Bob, one of the conditions on the subbies, in fact the ONLY condition on them, was that if the native frangipani gets damaged, so do they! It is now undamaged even though only 10mm away from the verandah gutter.

Mick has gone after cleaning up and having a beer on the verandah and his labourer is in the shade rehydrating.
l now have to finish the stormwater drainage and make a barn door to replace the roller shutter before the building is secure again. I will get that done before Christmas but l think inside racks and benches will now have to wait 'til after?

"The FLett's Folly" looks brilliant I do have concerns tho a veranda could lead to more sitting planning time than doing time but hey who cares retirement is just another form of R&R.
Best line the sparky up at least before winter.
Are you considering insulation or going to rely on shady tree in summer and additional clothing and working hard in winter.?

Undoubtedly you will spend many of your "almost retired" hours in there and when retired - a heck of a lot more.

... while I made the doors. I must be getting lazy but, these days, when l make something with a lot of half lap joints, l make it in 2 layers each of half the thickness and overlap the joints to get the same strength with half of the work....

I finished the door frames, painted them the same colour as the Colorbond roof and the roller shutter...

.... fitted them to confirm the new stud location and fixed the stud...

...and then, l extracted from its hiding place, a virgin sheet of wheat coloured Colorbond that was left over from the original build, and fitted it....

Excellent build, entertaining thread and, judging by the level of alcoholism, the rum corps is still alive and well in your neck of the woods. Paradoxically it appears to have sped up the build and significantly greased the rails of bureaucracy (why do I always have to look up how to spell that word: Every damned time...). As Murphy never showed his head, which is as we know, as thick as two short planks, perhaps he got word he might be used as a lintel, everything went well except for the sheets (oh, I forgot, Artme stole my retort except I was going to say two sheets short of a pack, but it sounds a bit limp now :- ).
Now anticipating great things for 2016.
One thing did concern me and that is the level of effort required for retirement. Think I might put off such ideas for a few years until I feel a bit stronger and more able to cope.

I thought "Me...Play an important part?" "I don't think so and I didn't recognise the saw first up. Then it all fell into place. By that reckoning quite a few people had a part to play not the least being IanW who donated the saw.
Good to see it is being put to good use. Somehow it looks larger in the pic than I remember, but it was a good size for a tenon saw.

Looking good, buuuuut........ shouldn't the diagonal braces go the other way, so they are in compression not tension? :sorry:
Less chance of the door twisting the way he has it, the other way the door will twist, I know it is the opposite to what we are taught/used to doing but a lot of years around farm sheds with timber doors and gates has proved this to be better.
the brace is designed to "lift" the free end of the door or gate transferring the weight to the hinge style and hence the door frame.Quote:

Ok, I'll crawl back into my hole now.:B I've not seen it done that way before. The timber door on my shed has two short braces in compression, one above & one below the centre rail.

ACTUALLY, if l was going to use 2 (timber) braces on each door, I would probably have used 2 in compression! It's all to do with the 'stiffness' of the brace. A long brace would be better in tension. A short brace, or multiple short braces would be equally as good in compression. On your disconnectors where it's a bit 'ard to have a tension brace ABOVE (:no:) a stiff steel brace underneath, in compression, is the only way to go?Quote:

The New Year's resolution was for fewer digressions so the question really is when does the New Year commence? I know a lot of people go along with 1 January, but as a lawyer friend of mind once said when confronted with an incontrovertible statement, "I don't agree."
So is it better to be in tension or compression? I have to say that if such knowledgeable gentlemen had not pointed out to me that doors (and maybe gates too) with braces in compression inevitably twist I would have voted for the compression brace transferring the load to the hinged side of the door or gate.
Really we are talking about a "framed, ledged and braced" door. The object of the brace is to prevent the door sagging and has nothing to do woith eliminating twist. Traditionally twisting is eliminated by the lock rail (middle) and the bottom rail, which should both be deep (225mm). The stiles and top rail should be 110mm. Again, to minimise the possibility of twisting the lock and bottom rails have two, haunched tenons.
The brace, and the source of the controversy, can be whatever width you wish, but typically will be around 75mm. Now with a door that is sheeted (tongue and groove) the lock rail, bottom rail and brace are the thickness of the door less the thickness of the sheeting. However with your door those three components can be the full thickness of the door as your sheeting is fixed to the face of the door. This would make them stronger again.
Note that in a framed, ledged and braced door there are two braces as a single brace would have the wrong angle for strength. I think this is what you mentioned in the last post.
If I found that doors, or gates, were twisting I think I would look first at.
1. The suitability of the timber (species, hardwood/softwood etc)
2. The dimensions of the timber
3. Seasoning of the timber
Having said all that (phew) I really like the look of the "V" and I think two of Disston's Victory saws mounted one per door would set it off very nicely. :rolleyes:
The last serious doors I made in this style were for the house we used to live in so it has been quite a time. The timber was Ironbark and I made up four framed, ledged and braced doors plus four more french doors. Now Ironbark is a really poor choice of timber as you may imagine it is all fine until you have to move and hang the doors: They are heavier than your brother, but they are still there nearly twenty five years later.
One last thought is that joinery doors (and windows) should be made in quarter sawn timber as this is more stable for this purpose. However, I didn't know that back in those days and I just got the mill to saw up the log I had cut out of the paddock so it was all backsawn. It was an old dead standing tree. The saw mill complained they had to sharpen their saw every fifteen minutes.
I hope this hasn't confused everybody. It's as clear as a forest full of trees to me.
