Sunday Round Table Jabber - Sunday evening all welcome

Sunday round Jabber,

Is on once again this Sunday, we seem to be getting a consistent group turning up, which is quite nice an cozy.
But we are also open to receiving some fresh meat, sorry mean other members.
So don’t be shy, we are all mostly harmless middle aged slightly opinionated, occasionally, but very friendly and mostly harmless.
An easily distracted by mostly anything, so I hope I’m painting a positive picture.

I’m feeling slightly under the weather(No didn’t get drunk).
So I will leave it up to you guys to post a Topic suggestion for Sunday’s Jabber(18 of April 7.30 EST)

Sorry i missed last Sunday but was exhausted after a couple of days of working on the main bathroom fixing the shower, basic re-grout and reseal it all.

Going back two weeks though and the bow-saw sander I got some spare time on the 3D printer

The wood is a little bit narrow but it was all i found that was close in thickness in the scrap pile tonight, to cold to actually think about machining a proper piece up

Well it actually works, no sign of flex in the printed handles, the wedge seems solid enough.

Couple of design changes will make it better though.
- make the insert slot for the sand paper deeper (ie longer)
- make the wedge both thicker and longer so it can be grabbed from the edges.
- round the handle some more to make a more ergonomic grip
- and for adaptability to different wood bows, make the hole larger but then do inserts for thinner or narrower bits of timber.

anyway it does work :)

That's amazing. If it were wood coloured I wouldn't know it wasn't an original. I like the idea of the wedges protruding to get a better grip for removal provided they don't get in the way when holding the sander. Do you know what the timber was for the stretcher? I note it just came out of the scrap pile.

The handles are 100mm high x 30mm wide and 35mm deep, minus the curved bits

The distance between them is obviously set by the timber in this case it's @ 400mm in length

For a small version i'd use something like i originally linked from thingiverse.

:)
i've never tried to print with the wood filament :) and honestly the natural coloured filament was loaded.. The timber literally was a strip off one of the 19mm thick hardwood floorboards hence why it's only 19mm wide :) exactly what species of gum it is/was i have no idea.... damn hand tools... i like this and i'll make a proper width section of wood over the weekend.

The wedges just need a couple mm each side, should never notice in use but will make it easier to handle putting in

I am not certain if I will be there this evening either

I too have a couple of health issues, with my back and other parts badly inflamed and painful. I have been running out of steam early in the evening as my body demands rest to assist with recovery.

Lifting this new acquisition into and out of my trailer probably has not helped much either but for $250 for a 50-year-old 18" Woodfast with newly replaced bearings and blade guides was just too good to not take.

It was a one on one with Doug tonight, although I am reliably informed that Pagie did put in a guest appearance, but left the stage by the back door early on when he assessed there was nobody in the audience.

Yes, I had a one-on-one with Paul and a one-on-none with Pagie. Not sure what happened with Pagie. I could see him and hear him. He was watching New Amsterdam on TV or computer and either he couldn't see me or didn't want to. I did seem to have some issues with video so it was probably not Pagie's fault.

The wife was watching New Amsterdam in another room, not me. I couldn't get a proper connection with Doug. I will try next week and see if it works better.

Due to on going family health issues,from both sides of family.

Would someone like to take over hosting Sunday night Round Table Jabber?.

Just until things settle back down to a normal rhythm.

As I’m not sure of my availability this coming Sunday and going forward from there for a little while.

Unfortunately my availability will be very hit-and-miss for the next month or two as well, or I would step up.

My level of technology is just not up there plus my availability is also hit and miss. For example this Sunday I am at work.

I shared this picture of a little pair of knitting needles I made a while ago in the chat last night. I think from memory they were 22 inches long.

I have never made a whole crochet hook but I have repaired quite a few. As I shared in the chat last night too, Jools used to have a dozen or so friends who used to come around for craft sessions once a month. One day one of them turned up with a crochet hook that had broken and was held together with a paddle pop stick and sticky tape and she was struggling with it. I took it out to the shed and replaced the plastic handle with an offcut of hairy oak all turned up on the lathe and a little flat bit for her thumb to register on. She had it back in half an hour and loved it. At the following month's session they all turned up with a broken crochet hook each. :doh:

We discussed the subject of European hand saws and why we don't see many. I think part of the answer is that they didn't make many preferring the frame saw instead. Peugeot did make tools and saws (as well as cars). They commenced in 1810. These are a couple of extracts from a 1938 catalogue:

Interestingly some of the blades are quite wide. Conjecture has been that it might not be possible to get sufficient tension with a cord.

I also misled you when I referred to H.Boker as being German. They were an American company. Possibly German origins.

Really interesting, Paul.

If you look at the Tage Frid videos you will see that he uses a broad blade (25 - 30 mm ??) when cutting straight lines and a narrow bladed (0.25 inches ??) bow saw when cutting curves. No idea if this relates to the tension in the string or inherent that the broaderer blade was stiffer. Like all of us, he used what worked for him.

One thing that intrigues me is the geographical distribution of saw types, including:

• Continental Europe tended to prefer the bow saw configuration,
• Anglo world (*) tended to prefer the hand held panel saw, and
• Japan preferred Japanes saws.

(* Anglo world = UK, USA, Canada, Australian New Zealand, etc)
