Ok.
Any hints?
Most workshops probably have an item that he demonstrated could be invented.
oen of the wright brothers - you know airplanes, handplanes etc
oh, nevermind...
:o
Another clue to help move this one along:
He is a Nobel laureate.
Which discipline?
Not Chemistry, Peace, Literature, Economic Sciences or Medicine/Physiology. :D
Another clue - he's French.
Antoine Henri Becquerel French physicist
Sorry to hijack this thread a bit but while you are playing with the real ones............who is this ???
I agree with Iain. He won Physics prize in 1903 for the discovery of radio activity. He shared it with M. & Madame Curie. ;)
Bingo!
Becquerel was famous for his work on radioactivity, but his main area of research was in fluorescence. This eventually lead to the invention that allowed woodies to work late into the night - the fluorescent lamp.

Thats easy Gumby- That's you.!
Nup
It's Ozwinner in his fleecy inner foiled pyjamas.
Bugger orf Gumby, it's my go.
Who is this character
Hubert Cecil Booth....
Mark Knopfler (with a hat on)
It's Hercule "Guitar" Poirot just after he shaved off the silly moustache and took up residence in Nashville, Tennessee.
Wrong, wrong wrong, the placement of the left hand should be of some help.
Burl Ives?
It's Slim's long-lost evil twin brother: Slightly Podgy Dusty.
I bet he's rolling in lute!
Andrew I suspect knows who this is, Burl Ives indeed, wrong, this person is alive and well and is considered to be one of the worlds greatest virtuoso's on this instrument.
He also has a friend who lives in Red Hill Vic when he is resident in Australia.
He also had a friend in Spain who was considered the Father of this instrument.
Segovia!
I agree, Andres Segovia, but I do believe he died some years ago?Quote:

It is not Paco.
Now I'm thoroughly confused  . Andres Segovia died in the 70's I think. So why put up his picture if the artist concerned isn't him and is still alive? :(
Sorry, I was as clear as mud, Segovia was claimed to be the greatest virtuoso of guitar, the original picture is crrently held to be Segovias replacement, as well as being a great friend of Segovias.
I inteneded that as a clue but it did not come out very well.
Segovia died in the mid 80's at about 95ish, leaving behind his young wife and 23 year old son.
Hence he was my mentor (I studied very briefly with Segovia in the 60's prior to getting my AMEB 8) and I hope to live as long.
Now to the original question, it is not Segovia, nor Williams.
Another clue, he is English and was self taught and performed on a regular basis at Wigmore Hall and has recorded albums with Williams.

Well done Mr C, what made you twig? apart from a fairly recent picture
Andrew's clue. I originally thought it was a play on guitar-lute but it was a clue that the guy plays the lute as well as the guitar.Quote:

Sorry, try this:
I withdraw the last two (but it could still be the late Al) and think it may be the spiv who was in Dads Army, regretably I don't know his name.
James Beck
Peter Lorre (sp) ?
This chap was very successful at what he did despite a handicap that most people would have thought would make it impossible.
Douglas "Tin Legs" Bader ?
He was born in Belgium but his parents were Gypsies.
