Fuzzie's idea got me thinking (sometimes this is really bad:o), maybe you can restore the table as is and build a frame to put it on so it's at the correct height for you. Don't have to worry what type (cost wize) is used for the supporting frame. Then reverting to your dad's coffee table is simple.

I like your idea of cleaning it up and using it as a coffe table. I love the look of large coffe tables....if you have the room of course :U

Thanks for all of your help. The mold seems to be staying away although it does smell "old." I'm not sure if stripping and varnishing will help with the smell. I've run out of time to get things ready for my big move but I'm leaving it at my mom's house and I will hopefully find a good use for it in the near future. If I finish it I'll post photos. Thanks again!

Once you have stripped and varnished it (remember to seal the underside as well) that 'old' smell will disappear. Looking forward to see the pics of the restored table.
